THE TAKE

Le Mans Sarthe Basket will look to give its fans a parting gift when it hosts RheinEnergie Cologne on Thursday in Group A. Both teams have been eliminated from Top 16 contention and will be playing for pride, although Le Mans can still play the role of spoiler in the group. Le Mans (3-9) has not won at home since topping Climamio on opening night. Overall the French champs have dropped six straight, with their last win coming at RheinEnergie in November. Eric Campbell posted 15 points and a season-best 12 rebounds to lead Le Mans that night. RheinEnergie's (2-10) seven-game losing streak began with that defeat against Le Mans. The German champs' lone chance of avoiding finishing the regular season in last place in the group is to win this game. The game features a few marquee matchups with athletic forwards Campbell (13.9 ppg., 7.8 rpg.) going against Ronnie Burrell (13.1 ppg., 6.3 rpg.), although Burrell is not sure of playing after having missed a week of action. RheinEnergie center Marcin Gortat (10.5 ppg., 5.8 rpg., 1.2 rpg.), who has totaled 25 rebounds in his last two outings, will test himself against Sandro Nicevic (12.8 ppg., 5.8 rpg., 1.3 bpg.). Devin Green (12.3 ppg., 2.3 spg.) could provide an interesting matchup against Nebojsa Bogavac (8.6 ppg.) and Pape Philippe Amagou, while Le Mans playmaker Tyson Wheeler (3.8 apg.) will take on Demond Mallet (11.8 ppg.). Of course, Le Mans could use the game as a chance to turn loose its young forward Nicolas Batum. The pressure-free atmosphere could translate into an exciting game for the fans. Campbell and Kenny Gregory (15.7 ppg., 5.3 rpg.) will try to amass some slams, while the somewhat flamboyant Aleksandar Nadjfeji (9.9 ppg., 3.4 apg.) could create some pretty passes for the visiting team as well. The fans in Le Mans should get to see some fun basketball again.

Quotes Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"It is close to our heart to offer our public a good last Euroleague game, and to end that competition with a win at home, after numerous defeats in a row. We know that Cologne is going to play without pressure, as we will - since both our teams have been eliminated from the competition - and that the two teams will try to play good basketball. We’ll have to watch Gortat and Nadjfeji in the paint, as well as the American trio McElroy, Mallet and Green outside."
OBRADOVIC, SASA
RheinEnergie
"Against Prokom, only five players scored for my team, and that’s why even though we played pretty well, we lost the game. We need to have additional players hurting the defense. With Le Mans, we face a team that likes to run a lot and play an open-court game. They are eliminated from the next round just like us, but still, every player wants to present themselves well in the Euroleague, so I expect a good game. Le Mans performed really well against Olympiacos and Dynamo Moscow in recent weeks, they are really improved, but lack the experience that they would need to win against big opponents like them - just like my team needs more experience to win on this level."

Players

NICEVIC, SANDRO
Le Mans
"This match may have a taste of revenge for them, since they lost at home. However, even though we’ve been eliminated from the Euroleague competition this season, we’re going to do our best to show our strength in the game, as the conclusion to our constant growth in this competition. This match will probably not be tense, which should result in a great game, enjoyable to play and to attend."
GRUNHEID, GUIDO
RheinEnergie
"By now, we’re used to facing big names. It’s a shame that the season will soon be over. We want to use the last two games to prove that we deserved to be in this competition. There were a few games where the other team was just plain better than us, but in other games we could have won had we played up to our potential. Against Le Mans, for instance, we lacked emotion. We let them dictate the tempo of the game. But now, we don’t have any pressure any more and can try to rain on their parade a little bit. But the focus is primarely on us, trying to find our rhythm after all of our injuries."
Kenny Gregory - Le Mans Le Mans gave its fans a parting gift in the form of a win in the club's home finale in its Euroleague debut season by downing RheinEnergie Cologne 69-60 in a Group A encounter in France on Thursday night. Le Mans improved to 4-9 and broke its six-game losing streak, but still cannot qualify for the Top 16 due to its tie-break disadvantage against Prokom Trefl, which beat it twice this season. Meanwhile, RheinEnergie dropped to 2-11 and will finish the regular season last in the group. Eric Campbell and Alain Koffi led the winners each with 13 points. Kenny Gregory added 12 points and Sandro Nicevic 10 for Le Mans. Marcin Gortat had 17 points for RheinEnergie, while Demond Mallet posted 14. RheinEnergie hit 11 of 13 shots to get a 20-25 edge after 10 minutes and keep a 34-38 halftime lead. Le Mans improved its defense in the final period and found a go-to guy in Campbell, who shined early in the final period to make his team add a prestigious home win.

Gortat got RheinEnergie going with an easy layup, but Koffi answered the same way for a 2-2 tie. Immanuel McElroy scored around the basket before Koffi and Gortat exchanged layups again for a 4-6 RheinEnergie edge. Campbell fed Gregory for a close basket, but a red-hot Gortat banked in a turnaround jumper. Demond Mallet hit a five-meter shot, but Gregory shined with his first dunk. Both teams kept exchanging baskets at full speed, as Nicevic brought Le Mans within 10-11. Mallet fired in one from downtown, but Gregory answered with a short jumper. Devin Green buried a triple from the left wing and Mallet scored inside to make Le Mans call timeout at 12-19. Nicevic and Gortat traded baskets, and McElroy buried a jumper that Gregory erased with a driving basket. Another layup by Gortat, a power basket by an active Gregory and a put-back layup by Yannick Bokolo fixed the score at 20-25 after 10 minutes.

Nicevic buried another short jumper at the the start of the second quarter, as Le Mans improved its defense. Even with that, Mallet scored in transition, but Nicevic found space for a layup to get Le Mans within 24-27. RheinEnergie called timeout, but an unstoppable Nicevic hit another jumper. Points came the hard way now, especially for the guests, who were limited to just two in over 5 minutes. Guido Grunheid found space in the paint for his first basket, but Koffi scored again to keep Le Mans within 28-29. Gortat left no doubt about his power with a big dunk, which Gregory erased with a layup. Nicolas Batum had a big block on Gortat, but Grunheid picked up the offensive board and scored. Campbell stepped up with consecutive layups, but the final seconds belonged to Mallet. He followed with a triple and a big jumper, which allowed RheinEnergie to take a 34-38 edge at halftime.

Marcin Gortat - RheinEnergie Green shined with a dunk right after the break, but Campbell erased it with a close basket. Bokolo hit free throws, as Le Mans kept shining on the defensive end. Campbell collected a steal and thrilled the crowd with a two-handed dunk, good for a 40-40 tie. RheinEnergie called timeout, but Bokolo capped a 9-0 run with a triple from the top of the key. Green dunked it again, but Campbell kept finding easy baskets in the middle. Le Mans kept trying a 2-3 zone defense, which Gortat beat with a tip-in. Bokolo fed Gregory for a layup that gave Le Mans a 47-44 edge after 27 minutes. Both teams went scoreless for almost 2 minutes until Koffi drew a foul and made free throws for a 49-44 Le Mans lead. Gortat copied him in the other end to bring RheinEnergie within 49-46 after three quarters.

Janar Talts shined with a reverse layup early in the final period, but Batum immediately answered from downtown to give Le Mans a 52-48 edge. Aleksandar Nadjfeji scored in the paint, but Koffi shined with a two-handed dunk. Nadjfeji scored again, but Le Mans soon regained its momentum. Campbell hit a free throw before Batum dunked it off a steal to give the hosts a 57-52 lead with 6 minutes remaining. Grunheid stepped up with a second-chance layup, but Le Mans now had the right attitude in defense. Meanwhile, Nebojsa Bogavac fired in a corner three-pointer for a 61-54 lead. RheinEnergie called timeout, but Koffi buried a jumper and Batum dunked it coming off the baseline to seal the win, 65-56, with less than 2 minutes to go. RheinEnergie kept trying quick shots, but Le Mans had made the difference with outstanding defense and managed to break its losing streak in front of its own fans.

Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"I am satisfied to win this last home game. We have been close to do it the last two times at home but tonight the win stayed here. After being too soft the first ten minutes, we made a better job in defense. That was the key of the game."
OBRADOVIC, SASA
RheinEnergie
"We were good in the first quarter. But in the second half, we were missing two players in the rotation. I want to congratulate Le Mans and we will try to present a better face for the last game."

Players

BATUM, NICOLAS
Le Mans
"I think it was a good game for us. We finished well for the last game at home. We were more aggressive in the second half. Everybody played hard, it's the reason why we won this game."
GORTAT, MARCIN
RheinEnergie
"I think we lost because our offense wasn't good at the end of the game. It was hard to come back in the second half."
