THE TAKE

Unicaja marks its Group B home opener on Wednesday night with a visit from Cibona Zagreb to Martin Carpena Arena in Malaga, Spain. Unicaja is coming off a narrow loss at Aris last week, 87-83, in a game which it led by 8 points early in the fourth quarter. But there is nothing like the sold-out crowds in Malaga to lift the team's spirits. In fact, Unicaja is riding an eight-game home-court winning streak in Euroleague action. Meanwhile, Cibona battled back from an early deficit to down Efes Pilsen 93-85 in its first game, at home in Zagreb. Cibona made due without big man Sam Hoskin, who turned an ankle in the first minute and did not return. Hoskin is travelling to Malaga this week. His absence was not felt against Eves thanks to the outstanding play of homegrown talent Luksa Andric, who finished with his Euroleague career-high of 19 points. The player in the spotlight this week will be Unicaja point guard Davor Kus, a former Cibona captain who switched sides this summer after spending six of the last seven seasons with the Croatian champs. Kus has made a soft landing at his new home and last led Unicaja in scoring at Aris with 17 points. He is part of a deep Unicaja backcourt, which also features Bojan Popovic and Carlos Cabezas, not to mention small forwards Jiri Welsch and Berni Rodriguez. Tre Kelley has stepped into Kus's shoes as Cibona's first-string playmaker, while shooter Larry Ayuso and explosive wing Chris Warren are joined by veteran Damir Mulaomerovic to round out the backcourt. Centers Daniel Santiago and Boniface N'Dong, power forward Marcus Haislip and versatile Carlos Jimenez represent Unicaja in the paint. In Hoskin's absence, Andric became the main cog in the Cibona frontcourt, with Marin Rozic, Vedran Vukusic and center Franko Kastropil also stepping up their games. If Hoskins is slowed down still, Andric's ability to carry Cibona's offense inside could be a key to this game. The big guy will have it tough against Unicaja's waves of interior defense, but without him, coach Josip Vrankovic's side could become too reliant on three-point shooting. Meanwhile, Unicaja knows that it can be practically unstoppable when its crisp passing game is working, and so will try to play smart basketball and avoid turnovers to maximize its talents. This game is no ordinary meeting for these teams. Cibona knows what a 2-0 start can do for its confidence and Unicaja cannot allow itself to start 0-2, nor to lose at home. Expect to see both teams at their best in this crucial Week 2 matchup.

Quotes Head Coaches

SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"I have to congratulate Cibona for its great first victory and for having put together an extremely dangerous team on offense, with plenty of points in its hands. They have great perimeter players and a talented inside game, all of them very versatile in the various combination that can be put on the floor. It goes without saying that our challenge is to recoup our defensive level so as to be able to stop Cibona's open-court game, penetrations. We need to get defensive rebounds and in general reestablish the defensive tone with which we had started the season but in the last week have misplaces, above all at the ends of games."
VRANKOVIC, JOSIP-JERKO
Cibona
"Unicaja lost two consecutive away games, so they are very dangerous now. We know that they play completely different basketball at home and away, so we will have a really tough opponent on Wednesday. Davor Kus was meant to be one of the key players on our team this season, but we all know what happened, so he is on the other side now. We know each other really well and it will be interesting to see how we will react in such an atmosphere against a high-quality team. I would call this game a real Euroleague clash."

Players

SANTIAGO, DANIEL
Unicaja
"We're in something of a down moment for us. We have to get a victory and I hope we'll be able to do it against Cibona. Every game is different and we have to prepare each one in a different way. Right now, we don't have to lament what is past, but rather learn from the mistakes we made in recent games. We need to keep going forward and, with the help of our fans, look for a win next Wednesday."
WARREN, CHRIS
Cibona
"I think that things look different then they looked at the beginning of this season. We play better, but we still are looking for team chemistry. The important thing is that, against Efes, we have shown a big heart and came back from minus-13. Unicaja is a very talented team, deep in every position and very athletic. We will try to limit and slow down Kus, our former teammate, but he is not the only one we have to stop in order to win."
Davor Kus - Unicaja A Final Four team from last season busted into the Group B win column in spectacular fashion on Thursday as Unicaja blew away Cibona 102-64 at home in Malaga, Spain. Both teams are now 1-1, but Unicaja made sure that it sent a message in its first home game of the group. An explosion of 33 points in the second quarter while its defense was also doing the right things made the rest of the game into a walk-through for Unicaja. Davor Kus punished his ex-teammates from Cibona by nailing 5 of 5 three-pointers on his way to a floor-high 23 points for the winners. There was plenty of credit to go around on Unicaja. German Gabriel scored 14 points, Daniel Santiago 13 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks, both in just 17 minutes of floortime. Boniface Ndong added 12 points and 7 rebounds. Carlos Cabezas and Jiri Welsch shared 12 of their team's 25 assists. Cibona has little to cheer about except 14 points by Tre Kelley, 13 from Larry Ayuso and more decent play from Luksa Andric. The visitors suffered most from a 39-20 rebounding advantage and could do nothing on defense to limit Unicaja's 66% two-point and 45% three-point shooting.

Ayuso had Cibona ahead in the early going with a three-pointer after tipoff and a shorter jumper that made it 2-5 for the guests. Andric copied him from deep and Kelley scored off a steal as the Cibona edge reached 4-10. Unicaja's shots finally started falling as Santiago, Carlos Jimenez and Berni Rodriguez brought the hosts within 11-12. Chris Warren's pair of baskets kept Unicaja behind a bit longer, at 16-18, but Santiago sonn put the hosts ahead with a three-point play and then Cabezas drilled a two-pointer as Unicaja held a 21-18 lead after 10 minutes.

Damir Mulaomerovic - CibonaJimenez pushed Unicaja further in front with a triple to open the second quarter, but Warren and Kelley were ready to carry Cibona some more as they shared the visitors' next 9 points. Kelley's driving layup tied it before his three-pointer put the guests back in the lead, at 26-27. What happened then changed the game suddenly and for good: Kus once and Gabriel twice detonated bombs from the arc to ingite an 18-7 run to complete control of the scoreboard. Gabriel got fouled on his next triple try and made all 3 free throws. Welsch got in the act with one from deep, too, before Gabriel returned to finish off the half with his long-range bomb, good for a 54-34 advantage at the break.

Cibona tried gamely after the half, but only got as close as 56-39 before Kus delivered again from downtown. He and Marcus Haislip were the only scorers for either team during a couple minutes that saw the difference climb to 65-41. It was all Kus all the time as his next 5 points pushed it to 70-43, but this was his quarter and he was not done. Another 5 points in succession by Kus - giving him 15 for the quarter - left the biggest lead yet, 78-48, after 30 minutes.

The only drama of the final quarter conerned Unicaja's drive for a 100 points to give the local fans three figures to remember from the first home game of the Euroleague season. Who else but Kus got the drive started with a triple at 85-52 before his teammates Ndong, Cabezas, Jimenez and Welsch took over the scoring for awhile. Gabriel did the honors with 2 free throws that landed the score at 100-64, by which time both teams were already thinking ahead on the schedule.

Head Coaches

SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"I would like to congratulate all my players for the great game they played, especially in the defensive aspects and also in the high shooting percentages. I would like to especially congratulate Daniel Santiago, because we have worked very hard to open spaces for him and he has used them in a very sharp way. He was also very decisive in the rebounding aspects. I think that this year we are in better shape than past seasons, we have very good athletic qualities and we play a very tactically smart game."
VRANKOVIC, JOSIP-JERKO
Cibona
"We have begun playing well but the mistakes and the faults of our big men have been decisive. Unicaja reached a very important advantage and it was completely impossible to recover it."

Players

RODRIGUEZ, BERNI
Unicaja
"We played a good game. We were very serious on defense during the whole game. We needed one game like this."
