THE TAKE

Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv will look to pick up where it left off when it hosts DKV Joventut Badalona on Thursday night in a Group B encounter at Nokia Arena. The game will bring back some happy memories for the Joventut elders, who remember that the club won its only European championship at this arena in 1994. But Maccabi is a dominant force at home, where it has won 10 straight. Last week the team bested Lottomatica Roma to improve to 2-1 behind a solid team effort as Will Bynum scored 19, rookie Lior Eliyahu added a career-high 18 and Rodney Buford had his best game in yellow-and-blue with 14 points off the bench. The soul of the Maccabi attack continues to be center Nikola Vujcic, who pounded his way to 8 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Vujcic now ranks fifth in the league in assists with 5 per game and eighth in rebounds with 8.3 a night. Joventut destroyed Partizan 82-51 last week to improve to 2-1. Lubos Barton peppered the nets for 18 points, while Rudy Fernandez and Andrew Betts had 16 each. However coach Aito Reneses will not have that luxury this week. Betts injured his knee in Sunday's domestic game and will miss a month. In his place the team inked 2.21-meter center Roberto Dueñas, a former Euroleague champion with Barcelona. He is expected to make his debut in Tel Aviv. The team's biggest star, Fernandez, is also a question mark after sitting out Joventut's Spanish League game with an injury. However Fernandez is expected to play. Despite Maccabi's dominance at home, Joventut has reasons to be optimistic. Playmakar Elmer Bennett scored a game-winner at the buzzer to beat Maccabi in Tel A iv with Tau Cermaica in March 2002 and reserve center Robert Archibald averaged an impressive 11.5 points and 8.5 boards in just 24 minutes against Maccabi for Pesaro in the 2005 Quarterfinal Playoffs. History also gives Badalona hope. Maccabi won 10 in a row at home between 2002 and 2004 before losing the 11th game to Zalgiris in December 2004 and then started another 10-game home streak that lasted until December 2005 when the team lost to Lietuvos Rytas. On the floor the biggest matchups figure to be at center, where Archibals, Dueñas, Andrew Sullivan and Charles Gaines will all need to do their bit against Vujcic and at point guard, where the active but relatively inexperienced Bynum and Yotam Halperin will lead Maccabi against Bennett. Although Maccabi is always tough to beat at home, Joventut already has one upset on the road this season and will be looking for another on Thursday.

Quotes Head Coaches

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Maccabi Elite
"Joventut is a good team. They have good results in the Euroleague and the Spanish League so far. They were unlucky against Panathinaikos but these things happen. They are playing very similarly to us. They want to play in the open court and use a deep bench. They also have a very experienced coach, so it's not going to be an easy game. Maccabi must win every home game and it doesn't matter the style the opponents play. We are practicing very hard lately and I see improvement every day."
GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"It's clear that having so many problems in the form of injuries is going to hurt us a lot. As such, it's going to be very difficult for the team to perform at its best. However, in the context of these circumstances, we hope that independent of the result, the team will do the utmost that it can at this time. About Roberto Dueñas, first we have to see how he is physically, but what's clear already is that he has no rhythm right now, but in addition, we have to see about his form in general, and if it's good, logically he can help us. If not, he'll have to get in shape and we'll see how long that takes."

"This will be our third home game in the Euroleague, and I just love playing in front of our fans. They are like our sixth man. Joventut is a real good team. Elmer Bennett is a really good point guard and they have Rudy Fernandez. It's going to be a fine game. Our bad Isreali League performance on Monday will have no effect on this game. I'm still adjusting to the European game style, but I enjoy this experience."
Nikola Vujcic - Maccabi Elite Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv used a record-setting first quarter to build a big cushion and then held on the rest of the way for a 92-75 win over DKV Joventut Badalona on Thursday night at Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv, Israel. Nikola Vujcic led Maccabi with 26 points and 10 rebounds as coach Neven Spahija's team improved to 3-1 in Group B. The win also extended Maccabi's home-court winning streak to 11 games. Joventut lost on the road for the first time this season, falling to 2-2. Maccabi held Joventut to 5 first-quarter points on 1-for-11 two-point and 0-for-6 three-point shooting, setting a defensive mark for fewest points scored by a visiting team in the first quarter. Joventut, which won the 1994 Euroleague title at the same arena, stormed back in the second quarter and got within 3 in the third quarter, but Maccabi Derrick Sharp turned the momentum with a four-point play and Vujcic controlled the game from that point. Will Bynum added 17 points and 7 assists for Maccabi, Lior Eliyahu had 14 points and 12 rebounds, Simas Jasaitas fired in 13 and Yotam Halperin 11. Lubos Barton had 20 for Joventut, which was without injured star Rudy Fernandez. Charles Gaines had 16 points and 7 boards, but went 4-of-12 from the foul line. Roberto Duenas scored 4 points in 6 minutes in his debut with the team.

Maccabi won the opening tip and went right to Vujcic in the post, who spun past Robert Archibald to dunk the game's first points. Halperin took a steal in for two more and then a give-and-go from Jasaitas to Vujic made it 6-0 before Gaines corrected Barton's missed layup for Joventut's first basket. Maccabi went right back to Vujcic, who scored in the post and then fed Bynum for 10-2 lead, which prompted Joventut coach Aito Reneses to call timeout after less than three-and-a- half minutes. A Barton clear-out resulted in a free throw, but Maccabi kept piling it on. Halperin drilled a three, Eliyahu took his own missed free throw and turned it into an offensive rebound and score and Vujcic threw down another slam before Bynum drilled a triple to cap a 15-0 run. Ferran Lavina made two free throws to end Badalona's scoring drought and then Eliyahu ended the period with a free throw to give Maccabi a 26-5 lead.

Ricky Rubio - DKV JoventutDimitri Flis started the second quarter with two free throws. Bynum responded with a fluke three-point play, as his attempted dunk sailed up in the air and landed in the basket. Ricky Rubio drilled a triple to give Joventut 5 points in 70 seconds – matching its total from the entire first quarter. Bynum came right back with a triple, but Lavina and Rubio, who took a steal in for a layup, had the visitors within 32-14 and thinking of a comeback. Flis helped Joventut cut the gap to 34-20 before a Jasaitis three. Then Barton fed Gaines for a slam and Bennett got on the board with a triple as the gap closed to 38-25. Vujcic continued to shine from the high post with a dish to Jasaitis for a score and then another to Halperin that led to two Jamie Arnold free throws. Barton kept his team in the hunt 14 with a three and then a runner in the lane that made it 48-36 at halftime.

Archibald scored from the line and then Barton nailed a three as Joventut got right back in the game at the start of the third period. When Gaines scored in the paint, it was already 48-42. Eliyahu and Gaines traded baskets and then Badalona took another bite out of the lead when Barton made a short jumper and the resulting free throw to make it 52-49 midway through the period. Sharp stepped up for the hosts with a four-point play and within a minute an Eliyahu slam had Maccabi back up by 10. Duenas scored his first points for Badalona to keep Maccabi from pulling away, but Yaniv Green and Halperin put the yellow-and-blue ahead 72-58 after 30 minutes.

Vujcic scored inside to start the fourth quarter, but Barton came right back with a three that gave him 20 points on the night and Bennett's free throws made it 74-63. Jasaitas drilled a three, but Bynum was called for an unsportsmanlike foul on Gaines that could have helped Joventut, but the big man missed three free throws on the next two possessions. Rubio and Bennett both fouled out in the next minute and when Sharp popped in another three, Tel Aviv had an 84-68 lead with five minutes to go. The rest of the game seemed to be for protocol only, as Joventut players showed little faith in making a comeback and the hosts seemed happy to pad their statistics with the crowd singing their praises in the background on the way to a 17-point victory.

Head Coaches

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Maccabi Elite
"I congratulate my team for a great victory. We played a great first quarter but I knew it wasn't game over yet. I don't like to hold an early 20-point lead against a strong team like Joventut. I knew my players wouldn't be able to keep up the tempo, and whoever came off the bench didn't react well. We played better in the second half, and it was enough. To play on the road we'll need to play much better. I love how Nikola and Lior play together. There's chemistry between them. Maybe we have a new Baston – maybe even better."
GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"We started slow, but Maccabi played hard and fast and they took a big advantage. After the first quarter, I'm happy with the performance of my team in the last three quarters. We played tough and Maccabi had a difficult time maintaining its lead. The fans of Maccabi pushed them very hard."

Players

HALPERIN, YOTAM
Maccabi Elite
"In the first quarter, we showed what this Maccabi team is capable of. I don't remember such a performance in one quarter by this team. They came back, but we knew they would press us. It shows we get better every game. I knew Lior would adjust quickly in Maccabi."
BYNUM, WILL
Maccabi Elite
"It's not that we slowed down after the first half. It's because Joventut is a good team that knew how to come back. We still need to get better on defense, but there's no doubt we show improvement from one game to the other."
HUERTAS, MARCELINHO
DKV Joventut
"We started the game very bad, missed many shots, some of them open shots, and Maccabi took a 20-point lead. From there it was very hard for us to chase Maccabi. We had to change the pace of the game from the second quarter on, because that was our only chance to come back in the game. We came back already to minus-three points, but Maccabi was less tired and knew how to take back another big lead to win the game."
