THE TAKE

Aris BSA 2003 hosts BC Siauliai with thoughts of avenging its 1-point loss in Lithuania just last week. In a tight Group C where all four teams are within one win of one another, it goes without saying that every victory counts. Aris arrives in second place in the group at 2-1 while Siauliai is right behind at 1-2. Siauliai enters this Week 4 contest with the added confidence of having beaten Aris, but its players also know that a slim victory at home in no way assures an easy trip on the road. Aris will have to shake off any doubts generated by letting a 13-point advantage evaporate in the fourth quarter in its first encounter with Siauliai. Beyond dealing with their execution down the stretch, Aris will also have to find a way to stop Siauliai’s Mindaugas Kuzminskas and Arvydas Siksnius. Kuzminskas had a spectacular game versus Aris, scoring 21 points, grabbing 7 rebounds and dishing out 3 assists in route to being named the Week 3 MVP. Despite his big night, Kuzminskas had to share the role of hero with his teammate Siksnius, who not only led Siauliai in scoring with 25 points to go with 5 boards and 3 assists, but also won the game with a jumper to cap his team’s amazing comeback. Other key members of the home team are forward Deividas Gailus, who had 16 points and 4 assists last week, guard Derrick Low and center Raitis Grafs, who anchors the middle. Grafs will once again go to battle with Aris big man Andy Betts and veteran Michalis Kakiouzis. The center and power forward combined for 30 points last week and will surely look to have another big night for Aris. At guard, Aris starts the trio of Jeremy Richardson, who led the team last week with 20 points, Aaron Miles and Nikos Hatzivrettas, while Juan Dixon comes off the bench to light it up. This three-guard set relies heavily on Betts and Kakiouzis to hold their own up front, something that Siauliai took advantage of by completely beating Aris on the boards to the tune of 34-24 in their previous meeting. Aris will have to find a way to cut down on the difference in rebounds this time around.

KATSIKARIS, FOTIOS
Aris BSA 2003
“This will be a very important game for us. Siauliai is a very dangerous opponent. By now, we know the way they play and we will have to fix our defensive approach, as opposed to last week’s game against them. We are dealing with a very athletic and quick team, which takes advantage of space when in attack, so we will have to pay extra attention to the rebounding aspect. Our weakness in the rebounds cost us a lot in Lithuania."

"We have already won one game on the road and now we have to take advantage of our home court, which will be the key for us. Last Tuesday we had a tough loss, but sometimes you have to lose one game in order to get better. We will try to control the tempo, because we know that Siauliai players run and shoot three-pointers as fast as they can. Every game depends on us, we just have to go out and play well."
Juan Dixon - Aris BSA (Photo Gintaras Siuparys)Aris BSA 2003 downed Siauliai 85-67 on Tuesday in Thessaloniki, Greece, to move into first place in Group C with a 3-1 record. Aris now has a one-win advanatage over second-place sides Hapoel Jerusalem and Zadar. It hosts Zadar in its next game after the winter break. Siauliai meanwhile dropped to 1-3 and sits in last place. A 13-0 run in the last quarter made the difference for Aris, with three consecutive baskets from downtown nailed by Michalis Kakiouzis, Jeremy Richardson and Nikos Hatzivrettas to lead 73-60. That capped an amazing performance from beyond the arc for the game in which Aris was 14 of 27. Kakiouzis led the way with 24 points and 7 rebounds, Richardson had 14 points, Juan Dixon 13 and Hatzivrettas 10 while Andy Betts pulled down 13 rebounds. Derrick Low led Siauliai with 16 points, Arvydas Siksnius netted 13 and Mindaugas Kuzminskas 12.

The game has a balanced start with Low and Richardson exchanging triples to make it 9-9 after six minutes. The guests tried to escape and veteran forward Mindaugas Zukauskas grabbed an offensive board to convert it into 2 points for a slim 11-17 cushion. Dimos Dikoudis scored from mid-range to get to 15-18 before Brandon Brown made it 15-20 after 10 minutes. Three consecutive baskets from downtown by Kakiouzis twice and Dixon gave Aris the lead, 24-20, forcing Siauliai to call a timeout. Low hit a three coming of it, but the hosts remained on fire with another three pointer from Keydren Clark for a 27-23 edge. Dixon reached made it 35-29 from the three-point land with four minutes remaining till halftime, but Zukauskas tied it 37-37 two minutes later with another rocket from long distance. Raitis Grafs and Aaron Miles scored layups to finish in a perfect balance, 39-39, at halftime.

A three-point-play completed by Kuzminskas and an offensive rebound converted by Brown gave Siauliai a 40-48 lead. Richardson kept Aris in charge with a dunk after Kuzminskas capped an 11-1 run from the foul line. Late in the quarter, Kakiouzis dished 2 easy assists on high-low plays to Betts go up 49-51. Nikos Argyropoulos hit a three pointer followed by a layup and Dixon put Aris ahead 54-52 after an outstanding 14-2 charge. Low posted just 1 of his attempt from the foul line to make it 54-53 for the hosts after 30 minutes. Richardson opened the last quarter scoring from downtown, but Deividas Gailius showed the pride of Siauliai tying it 57-57. Dikoudis and Hatzivrettas broke the tie for a 64-60 advantage with five minutes left and Kakiuozis scored the last of three consecutive three-pointers to cap a 13-0 run for a 73-60 lead. The guests tried to reply with Low, but Aris seemed to be in control of the tempo and with the accuracy from the foul line of its veterans Kakiouzis and Hatzivrettas, ensured the win.

Head Coaches

KATSIKARIS, FOTIOS
Aris BSA 2003
"It was hard for us, but we managed to impose our tempo and win. We made it thanks to our wonderful fans, who didn't stop cheering us, even when we were 10 points down in the third quarter. Siauliai is a difficult team, which has interesting players and a promising future. Argyropoulos was the key player for us. With his help, we changed the tempo and his energy passed on to his teammates."
SIREIKA, ANTANAS
BC Siauliai
"Congratulations to Aris for their win. The arena was very nice and the atmosphere, too. We played well for three quarters, but in the last period we didn’t have any more strength. Aris scored some three-pointers in a row and won the game. Arvydas Siksnius’s injury cost us very much, not only because he is a very important player, but also because his teammates were affected by his absence."
