THE TAKE

Panionios On Telecoms and Asvel Basket both go searching for victory number two in Group G as the two teams meet up in Greece. Panionios notched their first win last week at home against ASCO Slask Wroclaw - their first ULEB Cup game under new Head coach Nenad Markovic. The Greeks held Slask to 40% shooting while hitting 52% themselves. Center Yannis Giannoulis showed he deserved his first start in the ULEB Cup with 16 points and small forward Brad Newly found a better rhythm with nine points and 11 rebounds. Both players will play a major role in Panionios' chances against the French side. As will newly-acquired point guard Mateen Cleaves, who will have another week of time under his belt after collecting five points, two rebounds and two assists in his debut last week. But Markovic will expect an improvement on the 12 second half turnovers against Slask. Asvel meanwhile fell to 1-1 after losing at home in overtime to BC Kalev/Cramo. Head coach Yves Baratet saw his Asvel team shoot 49% from the floor, but the French defense struggled against the Estonians, who hit for 56% for the game. Small forward Robert Conley poured in 27 points as one of five scorers in double figures, proving to Baratet that he has plenty of offensive options. It is the defense that needs to show up - working together like it did in holding Ludwigsburg to 40% shooting in the opener.

Asvel Basket survived after a back-and-forth battle in Athens to beat Panionios 98-91 in overtime. Panionios handled Asvel for 30 minutes, but a critical 14-3 streak by the visitors in the fourth quarter changed the momentum. Giannis Kalampokis gunned 26 points for Panionios, but missed a chance to win it from the line in the last seconds of regulation. Laurent Foirest scored 19 and Robert Conley added 18 with 5 assists to lead Asvel, which controlled the extra period to improve to 2-1 and join Asco Slask Wroclaw, Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas and BC Kalev/Cramo in first place in Group G. Asvel next visits Wroclaw for a battle for first place. Meanwhile Panionios dropped to 1-2 and next visits Gran Canaria. Chevon Troutman bagged 18 points and 10 boards – 8 of them on the offensive end, while Uchenna Nsomwu posted 16 points and 9 rebounds and Aymeric Jeanneau had 13 points and 4 assists for Asvel. Dusan Sakota scored all 13 of his points in the first half for Panionios. Brad Newley added 12 points, Levon Kendall 11 and Ivan Zoroski had 10 in defeat.

After a close first quarter that ended 19-19, Mateen Cleaves and Sakota opened fire from behind the arc to start the second period as Panionios used a 9-0 run to sail infront 26-19. Kalampokis’s jumper and Kendall inside brought the margin to 41-31, but Troutman stepped up to score three consecutive baskets and 7 points and Conley completed another basket-plus-free-throw to finish a 10-point run to tie it at 43-43 before Kendal put Panionios ahead 45-43 at halftime. Newley and Kalampokis kept the hosts ahead in the third period and despite the inside play of Nsomwu, Panionios led 62-56 after 30 minutes. Troutman's dominance in the paint with another basket on the offensive glass followed by points from Conley tied the score and Jeanneau completed Asvel comeback with a triple for 70-73. The teams then seemed to trade baskets with Giannoulis and Newley connecting for Panionios and Nsomwu answering for Asvel. Conley gave the visitors a 76-79 advantage with less than a minute remaining. Vasilios Xanthopoulos’s lay-up brought it to 78-79 and good defense by Giannoulis gave Panionios the ball with 29 seconds to the final buzzer. Kalampokis scored off-balance for a 80-79 Panionios lead with 18 seconds to go. Conley was accurate from the line to put Asvel ahead at 80-81 as both coaches were now ordering for fouls in order for their teams to save the last possession. Kalampokis made 1 of 2 from the line and tied it 81-81. Conley missed at the buzzer and the game went to overtime. Nsomwu and Foirest combined to make it 82-86 and bad decision making hurt Panionios at that time and when Foirest nailed a triple for an 89-82 lead two minutes before the end, Panionios had to hurry. Giannoulis and Kalampokis trimmed it to 89-87 within seconds. Conley's free throw made it 90-87 and when Kalampokis missed a three-pointer, Asvel had escaped from Athens with the win.

Head Coaches

MARKOVIC, NENAD
Panionios On Telecoms
"We prepared the game in a way to prevent Asvel from scoring over 70 points, but as it turned out, we failed. If you lose 16 defensive rebounds, it’s too difficult to win games. In overtime we were more tired. Just a few days ago we had given a lot of energy to beat Aris on the road. We managed to build a 8-10 point difference, but we made mistakes that every team of that level can take advantage of. This was an important win for Asvel. This was a bad night for us, but I still have trust on my team and I know that we can compete against any team."
BARATET, YVES
Asvel Basket
"I am very happy, after last week's home defeat, we managed to grab this away win to even the situation. We had terrible percentages from behind the arc, but the 16 offensive rebounds kept us alive. We really missed Sangare, who was sidelined."

Players

GEORGALLIS, IOANNIS
Panionios On Telecoms
"We proved too tired after Sunday's big win over Aris in Thessaloniki. It's obvious that the turning point of the game were the offensive boards that Asvel collected. We knew that they hold a very athletic team, but we didn't manage to handle them. Now, we have to prove strong and overcome this defeat."
CONLEY, ROBERT
Asvel Basket
"It was a great game. Both teams played good basketball tonight. Some of our youngsters offered solutions as we faced some absences. We really wanted this win. We played well against a team with really good players and a very good coach."
