THE TAKE

Real Madrid will look to extract revenge against Dutch champion EiffelTowers Den Bosch after suffering a shocking and somewhat humiliating 84-77 overtime loss on opening night. Real scored the game's first 10 points, but EiffelTowers came back and fought the mighty Whites tooth and nail to force overtime and take the win. Travis Young led the way with 25 points on 5-of-10 from downtown. Former Euroleague scoring champ Charles Smith had his worst night of the season with 1 point. Howevr that game proved to be the exception and not the rule for EiffelTowers, which is 0-4 in the ULEB Cup since. Meanwhile, Madrid has been inconsistent while compiling a 2-3 record. The game pits two of the teams with the best domestic records in Europe this season against one another. Real leads the Spanish League at 11-0, while EiffelTowers is 14-0 in the Netherlands. Real is winless on the road, but 2-0 at home in the ULEB Cup, where it has limited teams to 58.5 points per game. It's best showing came when it held PAOK to 45 points in Week 2. Last week Ratko Varda had 14 points and 7 boards – both season-highs – as Real topped Mons 89-72. But the club has also allowed 100 points in two games this season as well. Meanwhile EiffelTowers has given up at least 90 points three times. EiffelTowers top weapon has been Leon Rodgers, second in the competition with 22.2 points per game and fifth in steals with 2.4. Young (14.4 ppg.) is the only other consistent threat, though Sharone Wright has been a factor in the paint with 1.4 blocks per game. Louis Bullock (13.8 ppg.) is the top scorer for a balanced Madrid, which has as many as seven players averaging at least 8 points per game. Felipe Reyes (8.3 ppg., 7.3 rpg.), who is closing in on the all-time ULEB Cup rebounding lead, joins Varda, Axel Hervelle (9.2 ppg., 5.4 rpg.) and Venson Hamilton on a frontline that could be too much for EiffelTowers. However the visiting side showed once that it has no fear and it will look to sweep the season series in what would be an all-time great ULEB Cup upset.

Real Madrid Real Madrid avenged a shock opening night loss to EiffelTowers Den Bosch with a convincing 84-61 on Tuesday night. Madrid led 25-13 after 10 minutes and retained a double-digit advantage for the rest of the game. Axel Hervelle led the way with 16 points and 6 rebounds in 23 minutes – part of an effort that saw 10 players play at least 13 minutes each. Marko Tomas added 10 points for Real, which improved to 3-3 in Group D and opened up a two-game lead over Dexia Mons and EiffelTowers for the fourth and last spot leading to the elimination rounds. EiffelTowers dropped to 1-5, losing its fifth straight since its sensational win over Madrid. Travis Young led Real with 22, Leon Rodgers added 14 and Marcel Aarts finished with 7 points and 10 rebounds for the Dutch-League champs.

Kerem Tunceri began the game scoring a three-pointer, but Young soon hit another three after an offensive rebound to even things out. However then Den Bosch went scoreless for 3 minutes, while Charles Smith and Hervelle scored from downtown. Hervelle drove to the basket to add a layup that capped an 8-0 run for the hosts. The two teams began to exchange baskets as Hervelle continued to produce easy points in the paint for Real, and Venson Hamilton joined the party as the hosts started to pull away. Felipe Reyes was able to assist Hervelle for an easy two being fouled. He completed a three-point play to put Real ahead by 14 with three-and-a-half minutes to till halftime. Young kept EiffelTowers alive with a quick layup and two free throws, but Louis Bullock responded quickly from the three-point line. Bullock popped in another from beyond the arc and Alex Mumbru gave Real Madrid its largest lead, 43-26, at the break.

Travis Young - EiffelTowersThe second half began with Real Madrid’s intense defense producing a fastbreak that allowed Smith to finish the play with some flare above the rim. Rodgers found an open spot to hit a three, but Tunceri responded in transition with a short jumper. Young kept EiffelTowers fighting up as he drove to the basket on a fastbreak to score an uncontested layup, but Bullock was able to hit yet another three to set things straight (50-31). Den Bosch showed good work on a pick-and-roll to let Aarts dunk the ball. Young found the right spot for a short jumper and Rodgers chipped in with a layup as he elevated the ball over Ratko Varda to keep Real Madrid 19 points ahead. Eduardo Hernandez Sonseca added a short jumper and Smith an uncontested dunk to put the locals up 21, but Young hit a buzzer from beyond the arc to make it 60-42 with 10 minutes to go. Robert Owens was assisted by Young in transition to score an open three, but Tomas responded quickly with a pair of layups and free throw to make it a 20-point game and essentially secure the victory for the locals. Madrid kept adding points thanks to Raul Lopez and Tomas, who showed some energy at both ends. Aarts dunked again, but Tomas made a steal and dished to Hervelle, who finished the play from above the hoop to the delight of the fans as Real coasted to victory.

Head Coaches

PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"I think my team was clearly better tonight. We played great defense and even some of my players surprised me tonight with better performances than I expected. We played serious and strong defense, that was the key."
WIEL, RANDY
EiffelTowers
"I think it was obvious that Real Madrid was better. I think the main difference was to be found in the height of players, we were not able to fight them inside. However I am not unhappy about our game, I think we defended well in the first half but we didn't perform well in offense."

Players

REYES, FELIPE
Real Madrid
"It was a complete game for all our players, I cannot highlight the individual performance of anyone tonight. I think that is a good sign. The defense worked well and allowed us to take a crucial win to stay in the ULEB Cup."
MUMBRU, ALEX
Real Madrid
"I think we were a serious team tonight. We played good defense and we played a complete game. I hope we keep on plying like this."
JONES, SAM
EiffelTowers
"The difference was Real Madrid's defense. Also we didn't play well in offense as in some phases we missed open shots. We didn't do bad in defense but we allowed them too many open shots and that is tough against Real Madrid in their gym."
