THE TAKE

Panellinios BC (0-5) hosts Alba Berlin (1-4) Tuesday night at the Lamia Arena in Athens with little at stake except pride in their last game of the Eurocup this season. With only one win among the two and sitting in the fourth and third spots in Group L, respectively, neither team can qualify for the next round at this stage, but the home side will try to at least go out with a bang before its fanbase. Panellinios has had strong contributions from forward Steven Smith, who was its main scorer last week versus Cajasol, but Torin Francis is also making an impression at the center spot. Some rebounding help should come from the hands of veteran Djuro Ostojic. The task of containing the talented Derrick Allen will be considerable, as Alba has been going to him often and can also post-up forward Tadja Dargicevic on occasion. Most of the visitor’s scoring usually comes from the perimeter, however, as Julius Jenkins has been feeling it of late and Immanuel McElroy and Heiko Schaffartzik can fill it up too, as the latter proved by hitting 5-of-10 triple attempts last week. Taylor Bryce and Luca Staiger add depth at the position, while Idbihi Yassin can fill in at forward. Vasilis Xanthopoulos and Manolis Papamakarios share backcourt responsibilities for Panellinios, while Joseph Krabbenhoft needs to be accounted for from by beyond the arc by opposing defenses, and Maurice Bailey can change the makeup of a game whenever he gets it going offensively. Slavkos Evangelos will face off against the likes of Sven Schultze at the forward spot. With neither team under great duress in their last game of the competition, maybe the flow of the game will benefit, and the fans will see entertaining, high-scoring basketball.

Panellinios BC
"We want to close with a victory in the Eurocup and I think we can do it. We played well in the Last 16 but unfortunately we did not get the results we wanted. Alba is a good quality team but we will do everything to win and to thank the crowd."

"It is the last game for this year's season in Europe and we want to say goodbye to the Eurocup with a victory. Although we were competitive in all games in the Last 16, we failed to get a win. We will try to reverse that situation against Alba and offer a win to our fans to thank them for their help."
Torin Francis - Panellinios BC (photo Panellinios)Panellinios BC finished its 2010-11 Eurocup season in style by downing Alba Berlin 86-73 in Lamia, Greece in Last 16 Group L on Tuesday. Both teams had ran out of chances to reach the Quarterfinals and tied for third place in Group L each with a 1-5 record, but Panellinios ranked third due to its tie-break advantage against Alba, that registered a three-point win in its home game. Steven Smith led the winners with 24 points on 5-of-6 three-pointers. Torin Francis added 21, Joseph Krabbenhoft had 14 while Maurice Bailey got 12 for Panellinios. Julius Jenkins led Alba with 18 points, all in the first half. Immanuel McElroy added 14 while Sven Schultze and Yassin Idbihi each had 11 for Alba, that led 30-31 midway through the second quarter. A 10-0 run gave Panellinios the lead for good, 50-41, as the hosts boosted their margin to 73-57 after 30 minutes and cruised to a well-deserved win.

Francis got Panellinios going with a jumper that Derrick Allen matched with a layup. Jenkins soon added consecutive baskets for a 2-6 Alba lead. Smith sank a shot that Jenkins bettered with a three-pointer. It didn't last long, however, as free throws by Maurice Bailey ignited a 12-0 run in which Francis and Smith combined for 10 points to give Panellinios a 16-9 margin. Jenkins and Smith traded triples but a three-point play by McElroy got Alba within 19-15. Francis scored again but Jenkins sank two more from downtown to complete Alba's comeback, 21-22. Krabbenhoft and Heiko Schaffartzik traded baskets to fix the score at 23-24 after 10 minutes. Manolis Papamakarios sank free throws early in the second quarter but Schaffartzik bettered it with a triple. Back-to-back jumpers by Allen and Jenkins soon gave Alba a 30-31 edge. A three-pointer by Smith sparked a 10-0 in which Krabbenhoft had 5 points to give Panellinios its biggest lead this far, 40-31. Andreas Seiferth made free throws but an outstanding Smith and Vangelis Sklavos soon made it a double-digit game, 46-33. Schultze hit foul shots, Lucca Staiger struck from downtown and a three-point play by McElroy got Alba within 50-41 at halftime.

Smith fired in a three-pointer immediately after the break and free throws by Francis boosted the hosts' lead to 55-41. McElroy tried to ignite the guests' comeback with a layup and Ibdihi followed free throws with a jumper to make Panellinios call timeout at 55-47. A three-pointer by McElroy capped a 0-9 run, as Francis stepped up with a layup. Idbihi scored again but Francis singlehandedly allowed Panellinios to restore a double-digit margin, 62-52. Schultze scored down low but an easy basket by Krabbenhoft and a jumper by Bailey made it a 12-point game, 66-54. Schultze kept pacing Alba with a bomb from downtown but Smith allowed Panellinios to get a 70-57 margin after 30 minutes. Francis and Bailey shined early in the fourth quarter to break the game open, 75-59. Allen hit a mid-range shot but Panellinios had started to use long possessions to run the game clock down. Nothing changed since that moment, as Panellinios kept a safe lead until the final buzzer and managed to finish third in Last 16 Group L.

Head Coaches

SKOURTOPOULOS, ATHANASIOS
Panellinios BC
"It was close to the best game for us this season. I'm happy for the players. We fought in all six games and this pleased me very much. The team, wherever we played away - and this can be verified by anyone in the team - was applauded by fans because we fought in every game and played good basketball. Now we will relax for two days and then focus on two games against Maroussi and PAOK [in the Greek League]."

"We had one more year of good progress in Europe. I think now we have our own identity. Maybe we could have done better this year, but unfortunately we got just one win in the Last 16. We played pretty well against Alba and we won deservedly. We wanted a victory to say goodbye to the Eurocup."
