Regular Season Round 4: Unbeaten FB Ulker leads Group C; ties in A,B and D!
There was plenty for fans across Europe and the rest of the basketball world to cheer about in Turkish Airlines Euroleague regular season Week 4. The week saw five games won by road teams, ended with four winless teams, there are three groups with ties for first place, there were two games decided in the final seconds and there is now one last unbeaten team. That team is Turkish champ Fenerbahce Ulker, which stands tall above Group C with a perfect 4-0 record. Group A packed plenty of excitement, with all three road teams scoring wins. On Wednesday Zalgiris shocked Caja Laboral 88-92 on the road behind 18 points from Mirza Begic. The next day, David Blu sank a game-winning triple with 0.4 seconds left as Maccabi Electra edged BC Khimki 76-78. Group A’s other road warrior was Partizan, which topped Prokom 62-69 on James Gist’s 16-point effort. Maccabi and Zalgiris share first place at 3-1. In Group B, Unicaja blew out Virtus Roma 104-83 as Berni Rodriguez buried 6 of his team’s 14 three-pointers on his way to career-highs of 24 points and 10 assists, while Olympiacos downed pesky Spirou 86-78 on Rasho Nesterovic’s 18 points. In an overtime thriller, Real Madrid trumped Brose Baskets 83-81 on D’Or Fischer’s tip-in. Predrag Suput had forced the extra session with free throes at the end of regulation. Madrid and Olympiacos top the group with 3-1 marks. Fenerbahce Ulker dominated previously unbeaten Montepaschi Siena 81-68 to go 4-0 in Group C as veteran Mirsad Turkcan notched a double-double of 13 points, 10 rebounds. In the Game of the Week, Regal FCB beat Lietuvos Rytas 69-55 as Pete Mickeal, who was doubtful before the game, scored 15. Also in Group C, Cholet Basket defeated Cibona 71-84 for its second straight win. Antywan Robinson led the way with 20 points. Montepaschi and Siena are tied fro second in Group C at 3-1, but meet in Italy next week. And in Group D, previously winless CSKA won 65-55 over Union Olimpija, which had been perfect until then, as Jamont Gordon had 15 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists. Panathinaikos hammered Efes Pilsen 84-61 to tie Olimpija for first place. Mike Batiste paced the Greens with 17 points. Armani Jeans rolled over Power Electronics Valencia 69-80 as Jonas Maciulis tallied 26 points. What a week!
