Kinder became the first team to reach the 2002 Final Four, with Benetton, Panathinaikos and Tau Ceramica leading their respective Top 16 groups. Kinder advanced despite a 71-82 home loss against Real Madrid, that needed to win by 28 to keep its options alive. Panathinaikos edged AEK 96-92 to lead Group G. Dejan Bodiroga had 27 points for the Greens. Tau downed CSKA 73-90 in Moscow behind 22 points from Luis Scola.
