The Club
Telindus Oostende is not an unknown name to European competitions, as the back-to-back Belgian League champion is in its third ULEB Cup experience and the team has played over 200 official games all around the continent. Founded in 1970, Oostende is one of the classic teams in Belgian basketball. It only took the team nine years to win its first title, the Belgian Cup in 1979, and it was just the beginning of the team's golden age. Oostende dominated the Belgian basketball scene and became the team to beat, but no-one seemed to do so all around Belgium in the early eighties. It won six consecutive league titles in the 1980-86 period, and Oostende added four more Belgium Cup titles, as the city was fully devoted to the sport. The team failed to keep its outstanding domination since then, but still was able to add some titles, like the 1988 Belgian League and the 1989 and 1991 Belgian Cup. After several up and down through the nineties, in which Oostende managed to keep its name into the very elite of Belgian basketball and added some more trophies to its roll of honors, Oostende found some success outside the Belgian borders. The team made it all the way to the 1999 Korac Cup semifinals after knocking off teams like Unicaja of Spain or Galatasaray and Besitkas of Turkey. Once Telindus became the main sponsor of the team, Oostende got back to the top, winning back-to-back Belgian League titles in 2001 and 2002, as well as adding a Belgian Cup in 2001. Euroleague and ULEB Cup appearances followed in this decade, a sign of respect for a team which can proudly say it won 12 League and Cup titles in its successful history. A new era has started with consecutive league titles in 2006 and 2007, turning Oostende once again as the team to beat in Belgian basketball. It comes as no surprise, however, as Oostende is used to greatness, and will not settle for anything less than that.
