WHAT'S NEW
Six-time Euroleague champion Panathinaikos Athens has made some major changes, including appointing a new head coach for the first time this century. Argyris Pedoulakis will have some big shoes to fill at a club for which he once starred as a player, and his squad features 11 ten new characters. Point guards Roko Leni Ukic, Derwin Kitchen and Vasilis Xanthopoulos and swingman Michael Bramos bolster the perimeter. Forwards Jonas Maciulis and Charis Giannopoulos also joined the team, and former All-Euroleague First team selection Sofoklis Schortsanitis, last season's Spanish League MVP Andy Panko and defensive ace Stephane Lasme lead the revamped front line. Panathinaikos loaded the paint with centers Hilton Armstrong and Gaios Skordilis, who both await their Turkish Airlines Euroleague debuts.

Panathinaikos Athens 2012-13

THE BACKCOURT
Six-time Euroleague best defender and former Euroleague MVP Dimitris Diamantidis has a new crew around him. Panathinaikos will depend on the play of its true superstar on both ends of the floor, and as one of only two players back from last season, his leadership is also a must for the new coach. The duo of Ukic, with his penetration and quickness, and Kitchen who boasts size, scoring ability and defense, should work well with Diamantidis. Former Green Xanthopoulos returns to back Diamantidis up. Newcomer Bramos’s toughness and three-point shooting could turn him into a fan favorite.

THE FRONTCOURT
Panathinaikos will have lots of size and power inside with the presence of unstoppable big man Schortsanitis and proven shot-blockers Lasme and Armstrong. The big trio will have their way in the paint, and Panathinaikos added more scoring inside with the savvy Panko. Three-time Euroleague champion Kostas Tsartsaris, the only returning player in the frontcourt, provides invaluable experience among the Greens, who can also turn to Skordilis. At small forward, Maciulis has an intensity and fighting spirit that will spark the team at both ends. Giannopoulos could prove to be a pleasant surprise as he plays his way into more minutes.

OUTLOOK
It may be a roster full of new faces wearing Panathinaikos uniforms this season, but the most successful Euroleague club this century put together a squad that has it all. With speed on the perimeter, muscle inside and defensive stoppers all over, the Greens look like a team capable of continuing tradition of great defense and powerful offense, the traits that led them to the Euroleague pinnacle so often.

Sofoklis Schortsanitis - Panathinaikos Media Day
PLAYER TO WATCH: Sofoklis Schortsanitis
One of the most productive Euroleague centers per 40 minutes in the history of the competition, Big Sofo arrives to help carry the offensive load. Schortsanitis is already familiar with Diamantidis from their days together on the Greek national team and should be a main offensive option from Day 1. With his craftiness around the rim, deceptive speed and overwhelming power, Schortsanitis figures to be a big draw for Panathinaikos.
