Alba Berlin brings back Byars
November 20, 2012
Derrick Byars - Alba Berlin - Finals 2010 Vitoria-GasteizLocked in a Group B battle for survival, Alba Berlin on Tuesday announced the return of forward Derrick Byars to the team he helped reach the Eurocup title game in 2010. Byars (2.01 meters, 28 years old) last played with San Antonio of the NBA briefly in the spring, but has previous experience in three European countries. He began his pro career in Cologne, Germany, where he played a few games in 2007-08 before transferring to Chorale Roanne of France, with whom he played his only Euroleague game before now. His first full season with one team in Europe was 2009-10 with Alba, when Byars averaged 7.8 points and 2.2 rebounds in 16 Eurocup games. They ended as runners-up of that competition. He started the next season at Panellinios, averaging 15.2 points and 6.2 rebounds in Greek League play, but making just one appearance in the Eurocup before moving to Bakersfield of the NBA Development League, from which he graduated to play two games last spring with San Antonio. Byars arrives in Berlin to replace the injured Brian Randle, who has been out of action since playing the season's first two games. Byars arrived in Berlin on Tuesday and is expected to be ready to play a key road game against Elan Chalon-sur-Saone on Thursday.

"My season at Alba three years ago was my best experience so far in Europe and I left Berlin at that time with good feelings," Byars said. "When the offer was on the table now, the decision was easy for me. I am delighted to be back playing at the 02 World before the Alba fans."
