Legends:
As the most-crowned club in Greece, some of the biggest names in Greek and European basketball have worn the Panathinaikos green. Among a list too long to recount, older fans will remember Giorgos Kolokithas, Takis Koroneos, Apostolos Kontos or Dimitris Kokolakis, Greek international players from the 1970s and early '80s. There was a slide and long climb back to prominence between 1984 and 1994. Current captain Fraghiskos Alvertis is the still-active link to that whole period. Other great players that have worn the Clover during this spell were the famous "Three Musketeers" - Nikos Galis, Panayotis Giannakis and Fanis Christodoulou - in the last stages of their great careers, as well as non-Greeks Stojan Vrankovic, Alexander Volkov, Zarko Paspalj, Dejan Bodiroga, Zeljko Rebraca, Johnny Rogers and, last but not least, Dominique Wilkins, a member of the 1996 Euroleague winning team. On the bench have sat the two coaches with the most Euroleague titles: current boss Zeljko Obradovic and Bozidar Maljkovic.
Home court:
OAKA Athens Olympic Indoor Hall (capacity: 18,500)
Famous fans chants:
"There is no bigger orstronger club" (from the Club's anthem), "Oh-eh, oh-eh, Green god Panathinaikos", "Here’s the top team in the whole of Europe"
Arch-rival:
Olympiacos
Fact file:
Alvertis, then 16, was on of the first transfers leading to the resurgence of Panathinaikos. He was bought from amateurs Glyfada for cash plus a waterpolo player...Panathinaikos lost two Euroleague semifinals to eternal rival Olympiacos before finally landing the trophy in 1996 in Paris thanks to a last-gasp block by Vrankovic...From then on, the Greens have constantly been among the European elite... Under Obradovic, Panathinaikos has been almost unbeatable domestically, losing just one title in the seven seasons...Obradovic is the longest-serving coach in club history.
