Ancient capital of...DEVOTION!
Athens is by far the biggest city in Greece and one of the biggest in Europe. Almost half of the country’s population of 11 million people is squeezed into the Athens metropolitan area. As such, the fact that half of Greek basketball’s first-division clubs come from the capital is no surprise. Indeed, half of the 14 first-division teams are based where once upon a time Socrates and Plato took their philosophical strolls. Of course, the total number of teams from the capital that have participated in the Greek championship from its birth in 1928 is enormous. Many of them have not stood the test of time and have disappeared altogether - like the 1937 title-winning University of Athens team - or simply lost their shine and tumbled down to the amateur divisions. We draw the map of contemporary Athens basketball by focusing on 20 different clubs that have played in the modern first division since its introduction in 1986, even for a single season.
