Final Four clinic brings coaching greats to Athens
Some of the top coaches in the basketball world will take time out of their busy schedules to lecture at the international basketball coaches clinic during the Final Four weekend. The clinic, which consists of eight 75-minute sessions, will take place on Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6 at Maroussi Sports Hall. It will give aspiring coaches the chance to learn secrets of the trade directly from the best. The clinic is organized jointly by Euroleague Basketball and the Greek Basketball Coaches Association.
Noted Greek coach Elias Zouros, currently of Paris Basket Racing, will open the clinic on Saturday morning on the topic of "zone offense, out of bounds and special situations." Winterthur FC Barcelona coach Dusko Ivanovic, who was only one win from leading his team to the Final Four, is one of three coaches who will speak twice – once on each day.
Ivanovic will lecture on the pick-and-roll from both the offensive and defensive perspectives. Benetton Treviso and Russian national team coach David Blatt will speak on "playing without plays" and matchup zones. Italian national team coach Carlo Recalcati's topics will be "improving the team by improving the player" and "offensive spacing and relocating". Also on Saturday, Pepu Hernandez, head coach of the world champion Spanish national team, will share his knowledge on the topic of "basketball without dribbling."
Each participant in the clinic will receive a certificate of participation, confirming that they took part in this rare opportunity to learn from the greats. The annual coaching clinic began at the 2003 Final Four in Barcelona and has continued to enrich the next generation of basketball tacticians in participating cities since.
