One of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague’s biggest stars put his stamp on the opening week of the 2013-14 season as Nikola Mirotic of Real Madrid claimed bwin MVP honors for Regular Season Week 1. Mirotic led a powerful Madrid attack with 18 points on near-perfect shooting as Los Blancos blasted Zalgiris Kaunas 63-83. Mirotic downed 3-of-4 three-pointers and also collected 5 rebounds, 2 steals and a blocks as part of his performance index rating of 27, which was the most among all players on winning teams in any of the week’s 12 games. The top index rating of the week belongs to Montepaschi Siena guard Daniel Hackett, who had 30 in a 75-84 home loss to Galatasaray Liv Hospital Istanbul. Hackett put together 26 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists for the Italian champs. The remaining three spots in the week’s top five are shared by CSKA Moscow center Sasha Kaun, Anadolu Efes Istanbul guard Jamon Gordon and Lokomotiv Kuban big man Richard Hendrix, each with 26 indexes. Kaun went for 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting plus 9 rebounds and 2 blocks in a 59-62 win at JSF Nanterre. Gordon collected 16 points, 6 boards, 7 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks as Efes bested EA7 Emporio Armani Milan 87-67. Individual leaders: Omar Cook of Lietuvos Rytas, 11 assists and 10th all-time
Hackett was the week’s top scorer with a career-best 26 point-effort. Partizan NIS Belgrade big man Joffrey Lauvergne hauled in 13 rebounds in a loss at Barcelona to top the charts in that category. Omar Cook of Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius moved into a tie for 10th place on the career assists charts with 11 in an overtime victory over Panathinaikos. Cook, who also had the most in the league this week, is tied for 10th place all-time with CSKA Moscow’s Milos Teodosic. Madrid playmaker Sergio Rodriguez swiped 5 steals on Friday to start the season in first place in that category. Three men –Fran Vazquez of Unicaja Malaga, Joey Dorsey of FC Barcelona, and Romain Duport of Strasbourg – share the top spot in blocks after one game with 3 each. Five players started the season with opening night double-doubles. Zoran Erceg of Galatasaray had 15 points and 11 boards, Fran Vazquez of Unicaja posted 12 and 10 and Crvena Zvezda center Boban Marjanovic had 10 and 10, while two players recorded point-assist double-doubles: Cook (10 points, 11 assists) and Barcelona’s Marcelinho Huertas (10 points, 10 assists).
