CSKA inks Goree, extends Pashutin
Euroleague runners-up CSKA Moscow have taken the first step toward strengthening their roster for the future by signing forward Marcus Goree, one of the perennial top performers in the competition, to a three-year contract. CSKA also announced a two-year contract extension for team captain Zakhar Pashutin. Goree (2.03, 29) has played almost his whole professional career in the Euroleague, first with Frankfurt Skyliners, then Maccabi Tel Aviv, and the last three seasons for Benetton Treviso. Among players with 90 or more Euroleague games played this decade, he holds the ninth-highest average index rating (15.4 per game). Last season for Benetton, Goree averaged 12.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
In making the announcement, CSKA senior vice president Andrei Vatutin highlighted Goree's "leadership, passion and heart". Goree, who is currently in the United States, said: "CSKA is a good organization. I know the head coach of the team, Ettore Messina, from the time we spent in Treviso. He talked to me and told me several things about Moscow and the club. I guess it will be easy to become a part of the team."
Under his new contract, Pashutin (196, 33) will push his time with CSKA to seven years, which started in 2001 and was interrupted by a one-season absence in 2003-04. He has won the Euroleague title with CSKA in 2006 and appeared in three other Final Fours, in 2003, 2005 and 2007. Pashutin has been a consistent if brief presence off the bench for CSKA, appearing last season in 16 games, including both at the Final Four.
