Laboral Kutxa Vitoria has made forward Tornike Shengelia its first signing ahead of the 2014-15 season. The sides signed a three-year deal that was announced by the club on Friday. Shengelia (2.06 meters, 22 years old) comes off an eventful 2013-14 season in which he played for Chicago and Brooklyn in the NBA and Springfield in the D-League. He totaled 29 points, 16 rebounds and 14 assists in 26 NBA games and averaged 13.3 points and 5 rebounds in four D-League appearances. Shengelia also played for Brooklyn and Springfield in the 2012-23 campaign.
Shengelia has previous Turkish Airlines Euroleague experience with Belgacom Spirou Charleroi, where he averaged 8.3 points and 4.3 rebounds in nine games in the 2011-12 season. Shengelia has also played for VOO Verviers-Pepinster in Belgium and Valencia Basket Club in Spain and been a regular for the Georgian national team. He helped Valencia win the Eurocup title in 2010, reached the 2012 Belgian League final with Spirou and shined at the 2011 U20 Division B European Championships, in which he averaged 29.9 points and 12 rebounds to lead Georgia to the trophy with MVP honors. Shengelia is expected in Vitoria on Monday for a physical examination, after which the contract will go into effect.
