Real Madrid reached a new agreement with two-time All-Euroleague first team selection Rudy Fernandez to keep him in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague powerhouse until the end of the 2017-18 season, the club announced Thursday. Fernandez (1.96 meters, 29 years old) averaged 13.2 points on 89.1% free throw shooting, 4.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.5 steals in 31 Euroleague games last season, in which he was chosen to the All-Euroleague first team for the second consecutive year. In his two full seasons with Real Madrid, Fernandez led Los Blancos to back-to-back Euroleague finals, losing against Olympiacos Pireaus in 2013 and Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv in 2014. He also helped Madrid win the the Spanish League title in 2014 and lift the Spanish King's Cup trophy last season. He started the 2011-12 season with Madrid and averaging 11.5 points on 89.5% free throw shooting, 3.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals in 8 Euroleague games before he went on to play for Denver in the NBA - only to return to Los Blancos in 2012. In 85 Euroleague career games, Fernandez totals 1,171 points and 336 rebounds.

A former Euroleague Rising Star award winner and a two-time European champion, the popular swingman spent the previous three seasons in the NBA playing for Portland. Fernandez started his career with Joventut Badalona, whom he led to a glorious period in the mid-2000s. He was chosen as the 2007-08 Euroleague Rising Star after averaging 15.8 points in 19 games. Fernandez also led Joventut to the 2006 FIBA Europe Cup and the 2008 ULEB Cup titles. He was chosen as the 2008 ULEB Cup Final Eight MVP after averaging 16 points in the final three games to lead Joventut to the trophy. Fernandez also won the 2008 Spanish King's Cup, during which he collected MVP honors. He is a regular member of the Spanish national team. Fernandez led Spain to victories at the 2006 FIBA World Championships, EuroBasket 2009 - when he was chosen to the All-Tournament team, and at EuroBasket 2011. He also has silver medals from the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games in Beijng, China and London, England, respectively, as well as in EuroBasket 2007. Fernandez also helped Spain get a bronze medal at EuroBasket 2013. He is set to help Spain at the 2014 FIBA World Cup.
