Roma signs veteran big man Fucka

Gregor Fucka Gregor Fucka is Lottomatica Roma's first major signing for the coming signing, the team announced Friday. Fucka (215, 35), who has played the majority of his illustrious career in Italy, signed a one-year deal with a team option for the 2008-09 season. Fucka is a veteran of six Euroleague seasons with Fortitudo Bologna and and Barcelona, having won the Euroleague crown alongside the current Roma sports director, Dejan Bodiroga, with Barca in 2003. Fucka admitted that the presence of his former teammate played a role in is decision to join the club from the Italian capital.

Fucka began his career with KK Triglav Kranj in his native Slovenia and later moved to Olimpija Ljubljana. He began his Italian adventure with Pallacanestro Trieste in 1988, transferred to Olimpia Milano in 1994 and moved to Bologna in 1997. Fucka signed for Barcelona in 2002 and played there until last season, when he joined Akasvayu Girona.He is on the Euroleague's all-time top 10 lists for points scored (1,499), rebounds (732) and blocks (96).

"This is like a dream-come-true," Fucka said in a statement. "I return to Italy, to Rome with great enthusiasm. I was moved when I signed the contract. I came to play for an important club that competes in the Euroleague and to be in such a beautiful city that I can not find words to describe it."
