Zalgiris lands Damir Markota
One of the most promising European power forwards returned to Euroleague Basketball on Wendesday, when Zalgiris announced the signing of Damir Markota, who inked a deal with the Lithuanian champs for the remainder of the season. Markota (209, 23) arrives from Spartak St. Petersburg, where he averaged 11.7 points and 5.9 rebounds in 15 Russian League games. He grew up with Cibona Zagreb and made his Euroleague debut in the 2001-02 season. He was sent on loan to Sanac Karlovac but soon returned to Cibona to play there for three more years, until the end of the 2005-06 season. Markota helped Cibona to win three Croatian League titles in 2002, 2004 and 2006, as well as averaging 7.8 points and 5.1 rebounds in his final Euroleague season with the team. Last season, Markota played for the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA, as well as for the Tulsa 66ers in the D-League. "He is a very versatile player who can hit outside shots and fight under the baskets," Zalgiris playmaker Marko Popovic said about his former and new teammate. Both players have joined forced before at Cibona and with the Croatian national team.
