Nike IJT Belgrade Game Report: Montepaschi Siena 66-82 Red Star
Red Star from Belgrade began their Group B play 1-0 with a 66-82 win over Montepaschi Siena. After a slow start the Serbs used their deeper bench to tire and outlast the Italians, with a 28-14 third quarter the key in deciding the game. Montepaschi move to 0-1 with the loss. Four players from Red Star registered doubl digit points in a team effort, whilst David Cournooh shot the lights out on his way to 29 pioints and 10 fouls drawn. Both teams came out of the blocks brightly, exchanging baskets for the opening minutes. An inspired Cournooh already had 11 points as Montepaschi led 26-20 at the first break. In the second stanza Montepaschi alternated their staple man defense with a 2-3 zone defense as neither team was able to break away. Metreveli proved a good complement for his team as he put points on the board and was a big presence inside. A missed dunk by Radosavljevic summed up Red Star's bad luck as they went into halftime down six, 38-32. Whatever it was that Coach Nikitovic told his team in the locker room seemed to work - Red Star became a lot more vocal and outscored their opponents 28-14, using a balanced scoring attack with Nedovic and Majstorovic leading the way. Steals turned into fastbreak points as the scoreboard read 52-60. The fourth quarter saw the team in Red continue their dominance as they spread the wealth and ran out 66-82 winners, looking good for a showdown with Prokom Trefl Sopot to make the semifinals.
