Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv has announced the signing of point guard Gal Mekel (20, 194), although he is ineligible to play in the Euroleague until next season. Mekel signed for the rest of this season and three more that will keep the Israeli prospect with Maccabi through 2011. Mekel played previously on Maccabi's junior teams, which he collected the domestic junior championship and cup. He chose the NCAA as his next destination and spent the past two years with Wichita State College. In the season just ended, he was a starter, averaging 9.3 points, 3.7 assists and 3.2 rebounds - more than double the statistical output of his first season. Mekel is a smart point guard with great passing and ball handling skills on top of a good long-range shot. Maccabi will be his first senior club, and he will be eligible to help his new team try to repeat as Israeli League champions this spring.
