Week 2 MVP: Eric Campbell, Le Mans Sarthe Basket
The best individual performance in Game 2 of the Euroleague came in a losing effort, as Eric Campbell of Le Mans Sarthe Basket achieved an index ranking of 32, more than any other player this week. Despite the fact that Le Mans was defeated 69-67 at Prokom Trefl Sopot in Group A, Campbell shined with 27 points on 11-for-13 shooting, including 5-for-7 three-pointers. He added 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 3 fouls drawn for an index rating of 32. Henry Domercant of Olympiacos was second in the MVP standings with a 30 index. He led his team to a road win against Climamio with 29 points on 11-for-15 shooting and 4 rebounds to keep the Reds undefeated in Group A. Luka Bogdanovic of Partizan and Simas Jasaitis of Maccabi Elite, who went head-to-head in the same game, shared the week's third-best index rating, 29. Bogdanovic came off the bench for 17 points as Partizan won their Group B showdown. Jasaitis had 27 points for Maccabi. Matjaz Smodis of CSKA, with an index rating of 27, completed the top individual performances of the week. His 17 points helped beat Aris in the home opener for the champs.
"This is a great honor on an individual level, especially when you think of all the great players in the Euroleague," Campbell said, "but it would be a lot sweeter if we had won the game.
"This is our first time in the Euroleague as a team, and it's a first-time experience for a lot of us, so we're getting a fresh taste of the top level of European Basketball. We can look at the game in two ways. We were were down by a lot in the first half, and it look like it was going to be a big loss, but we were able come back, make it close and only lose by two points. That could be big later if point differences come into play, so hopefully those points we made up with help us win the feat of making the Top 16. It's better lose by 2 than by 10. We've got to take what we can from this game and keep learning. We know that every Euroleague game will be tough for us, but we hope to catch people off guard and win here and there. One thing is sure: we're going to compete from start to finish every night."
Among individual leaders after two weeks of the regular season, Domercant tops the scorers' list with 24 points per game so far. Mirsad Turkcan of Fenerbahce averages 11.5 rebounds, the most to date. The assists master so far is Scoonie Penn of Olympiacos, with 6.5 on average. Terrell Lyday of Benetton is putting up 5 steals per game to led that category. And in shot blocks, a group of five players - Kaya Peker of Tau, Marcus Goree of Benetton, Florent Pietrus of Unicaja, Jordi Trias of Winterthur FCB and Marcus Haislip of Efes Pilsen - are setting the pace with 2 per game.
