Euroleague newcomer Panionios On Telecoms has chosen a rising star in the coaching world to lead the club in its Euroleague return, signing Aleksandar Trifunovic to a two-year deal on Friday. Trifunovic, 41, arrives from Lietuvos Rytas, which he led to the ULEB Cup Final and then the Euroleague Top 16 in just a season-and-a-half with the club. Trifunovic arrived in Vilnius at the start of the 2006-07 season as assistant coach of Zmago Sagadin and was promoted to head coach in February 2007. He also won the 2007 Baltic League crown with L. Rytas. Trifunovic was previously the head coach for Red Star Belgrade in his native Serbia. He replaces Nenad Markovic, who led Panionios to a third-place finish in the Greek League last season and a spot in the Euroleague after more than a decade away.
