CSKA gets Zoran Planinic from Tau
CSKA Moscow moved quickly to replace Theo Papaloukas by inking Zoran Planinic for two seasons. Planinic (199, 26) arrives from Tau Ceramica, which he helped reach the last two Euroleague Basketball Final Fours. The tall guard is known for his excellent court vision and nifty passing ability, which makes those around him into better players. He averaged 10.6 points and 3.1 assists in 25 Euroleague games for Tau last season, including a 17-point, 4-assists showing in the Final Four semifinal game in Madrid. Planinic recorded 9.8 points and 2.8 assists per game in the Spanish League, helping Tau win its domestic championship.
Planinic is a product of the youth system at Cibona Zagreb in his native Croatia, where he burst onto the scene as a teenager, averaging 12.1 points on 50% three-point shooting in his second Euroleague season, 2001-02. In the summer of 2003, Planinic signed for New Jersey of the NBA, where he served as the backup for Jason Kidd. Planinic took part in 148 NBA games over three seasons helping his team win its regular season division twice in that span. He returned to the Euroleague in 2006 and has been a key player for Tau since his arrival. Among Planinic's career highlights are winning two Croatian league and Cup doubles, one Spanish title and representing his country at the 2003, 2005 and 2007 European Championships.
"I am very excited to sign the contract with CSKA," Planinic said in a statement. "It is a great honor for me. I know J.R.Holden, Trajan Langdon and the rest of the players for a long time and I think it would not take me long to get used to the team."
"We are happy Planinic accepted our offer," CSKA CEO Andrei Vatutin said. "He is a unique player who can perform on three positions, can assist and shoot from the outside. I think that with Planinic on the roster our potential will grow, our game would become more balanced and it would not be hard for Zoran to understand our philosophy. I also want to thank Tau president Jose Antonio Querejeta for his cooperation."
