Joan Plaza, Head Coach

Coach, tell us about your team's roster for the next Euroleague season, what changes you made and what improvements you expect to gain from those decisions?
"We signed some new players who came here to help those one who have been working for us over the last three years. Massey has arrived from Aris TT Bank, Hosley came from the Turkish League while Pepe Sanchez got here from Barcelona. We also brought back Marko Tomas after a season on loan at Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada in which he saw a lot of playing time. We all expect them to help the team in specific situations in which we had some troubles last year. We are going to try to play closer to the basket and harder in defense. We thought they can help us a lot in these issues."
How much can you learn from the preseason about your team? What signs do you look for now that will help when the Euroleague starts?
"We had some big troubles in pre-season because we were waiting for five guys in our team, for many reasons. Some of them were playing the Olympics with the Spanish and Croatian national teams. Venson Hamilton has been sidelined for the best part of the last two years. He is beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel, as he will begin to work with us next week. Massey has been playing the EuroBasket Qualifying Round with FYROM and Axel Hervelle has some knee problems. As for the rest of the teams in our group, we know that they are playing at a very good level. CSKA, for instance, has played against some good teams in Italy and Moscow. We are going to try to start competing after some good pre-season games. We have a tough start against Unicaja in the Spanish League season. That's when we will see if we have enough time to be ready for the big battle."
Now that all the other teams have mostly completed their rosters, how does the competition in the Euroleague this season look like to you?
"We have learned a lot from last year, in which we won our regular season group and were also first in the Top 16 before the last game of that phase against Olympiacos. We did not manage to make it to the playoffs, however, and ran out of chances to play the Final Four in Madrid. This season we will try to grow up step by step, be more consistent in some specific games. Everybody wants to be in the situation than Real Madrid was last season. We led our Euroleague group and the Spanish League regular season at some point. Finally we lost a couple of important games and were out of both competitions. We learned from our mistakes and are ready to take one game at the time. Maybe we will lose more games but the main goal is to make our fans happy with good news in terms of titles."
What are your goals going into the new Euroleague season?
"We have seen, especially in Spanish basketball, that some of the European players that were in the NBA are coming back. We know that a lot of teams are signing good players coming back from the NBA. The Euroleague is growing and the competition is giving people more expectation. It is a very consolidated competition which becomes more and more difficult for everyone. Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, CSKA, Maccabi or Barcelona are investing a lot of money in good signings. We believe in ourselves as a team. We think we can beat anybody."

The winningest team in European club competitions is ready to challenge for yet another Euroleague title. Real Madrid has only lifted one Euroleague trophy since 1980, but this year the team has gained the athleticism and talent it needs to be competitive at the highest level. Madrid retained the core of players that was one win away from reaching the Quarterfinal Playoffs last season, including point guard Raul Lopez, scoring ace Louis Bullock, three-point threat Alex Mumbru, power forwards Felipe Reyes and Axel Hervelle and center Lazaros Papadopoulos. And Madrid did not stand pat when it came to finding what it needed in the off-season market. The club moved quickly to add Jeremiah Massey, a Euroleague superstar with Aris TT Bank in each of the last two years, pass-first playmaker Pepe Sanchez, athletic forward Quinton Hosley and swingman Marko Tomas, who returns to Madrid after a breakout season on loan elsewhere. The combination of old and new faces gives head coach Joan Plaza a deep, versatile roster that may well have no limits this season.

Head Coach: Joan Plaza
The tandem of Lopez and Sanchez is an excellent starting point for the offense. Lopez, who returned to the Spanish national team to win the silver medal at the Olympics this summer, brings great creativity, ball-handling and court sense. Sanchez is one of the best at threading the needle for game-breaking plays and has nerves of steel when the game is on the line. He reunites with Papadopoulos after the two helped Panathinaikos win the Euroleague title in 2002. The unstoppable Bullock is a unique shooter with unlimited range and a lightning quick first step. Tomas returns ready for more responsibility. At age 23, Tomas is set for greatness due to his endless talent and offensive skills. Mumbru is not afraid to pull the trigger from downtown and helps Madrid on the boards. And the young Sergi Llull offers defense and intensity off the bench.

Perhaps the most interesting fit for Madrid has been Hosley, an incredible athlete who dominated the Turkish League last season. He is set to see time at both forward spots due to his versatility and jumping skills. Massey was the Euroleague's top rebounder last season and also led the index ranking table. His combination of size, speed and athleticism allows him to beat anybody one-on-one. Hosley and Massey will fire up the Palacio Vistalegre crowd with their high-flying dunks. Hervelle is a modern power forward and an outstanding defensive player. His intensity, work ethic and shooting range is of the highest level. Reyes seems to improve every year despite already being a superstar and has most recently extended his shooting range to go with his dominant game in the low post. A much thinner Papadopoulos looks to bounce back from an underwhelming first year in Madrid, offering rebounds and an outstanding array of hook shots.

Coach Plaza went from winning the Spanish League and the ULEB Cup titles with Madrid in 2006 to earlier-than-expected exits in the Spanish League and the Euroleague last season. He is now ready to lead the team to the level it reached in previous decades, nothing but challenging for each and every title. Few teams look this strong before the start of the season boasting creative point guards, big-time scorers, talented big men and athleticism everywhere. Reaching the Final Four and even more is not out of the question this season.
