The very first game of the 2008-09 Euroleague season was remarkable for another reason: it also boasted the single best individual performance in all of Week 1. Will McDonald of Tau Ceramica helped his team to win the opening game with a performance index rating of 32, tops among all 217 players who stepped on court around the continent this week. McDonald led Tau an 80-70 home victory over Fenerbahce Ulker by scoring 18 points on 7-for-7 two-point shooting. He added 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 5 blocked shots and 4 fouls drawn for a 32 index. Rawle Marshall of Cibona helped his team to register an outstanding 81-79 home win against Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv with 20 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals and 7 fouls drawn, good for a 29 index. One of his opponents in that game, D'or Fischer of Maccabi, had 26 points on 11-for-12 two-pointers and 7 rebounds for a 28 index rating. Mirza Begic of Union Olimpija and Ersan Ilyasova of Regal FC Barcelona, with indexes of 26, completed the top individual performances of the first week.
Individual highs: Fischer, 26 points
Fischer not only was one of the best players in Week 1, but also its top scorer with 26 points against Cibona. Loren Woods of Zalgiris led all rebounders by pulling down 16 in his team's road loss against Panathinaikos. Marques Green of Fenerbahce Ulker, Demond Mallet of DKV Joventut and last season's All-Euroleague guard Terrell McIntyre of Montepaschi Siena each dished 7 assists this week. Dusan Kecman collected 4 steals - more than anyone this week - to help Panathinaikos beat Zalgiris in Athens. Week 1 MVP McDonald of Tau had 5 blocks in the opening game against Fenerbahce Ulker. Only four players registered double-doubles this week: Woods had 17 points and 16 rebounds, Ilyasova 18 and 12, Ksistof Lavrinovic of Montepaschi Siena 13 and 13, and Stephane Lasme of Partizan 11 points, 14 rebounds.
