Week 2 MVP: Pops Mensah-Bonsu, DKV Joventut
A newcomer playing in just his second Euroleague game ever,
Pops Mensah-Bonsu
of DKV Joventut, earned the MVP honor for Week 2 of the regular season with a competition-best individual performance index rating of 37. Mensah-Bonsu's effort came in a losing cause, however, as Joventut fell 85-71 on the road at Lottomatica Roma in Group C on Thursday. Mensah-Bonsu was everywhere on the court in Rome, collecting 23 points on 11-for-12 free throws, 14 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists and 2 blocks while also drawing 8 fouls for Joventut. Behind him, with an index rating of 35, came Daniel Ewing of Asseco Prokom, whose outstanding second-half show led his team to a 91-62 home win against Sluc Nancy in Group B. Ewing had 32 points on 7-for-9 two-point and 6-for-8 three-point shooting, plus 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Ewing scored 28 of those points in the second half, including all his six three-pointers. Ewing's 32 points were the most in Euroleague history for a player who attempted no free throws in a game. Carlos Arroyo of Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv came next with 20 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists in his team's home win against Avellino, good for a 33 index. Ioannis Bouroussis of Olympiacos (index 32) and Mirsad Turkcan of Fenerbahce (30) completed the top individual performances of the week. Bouroussis posted his career-high index rating as Olympiacos topped Unicaja in Group A, while Turkcan had his highest point total since 2002 as Fenerbahce beat Alba in Group C.
Individual highs: Daniel Ewing, Prokom, 32 points
His second-half exhibition allowed Ewing to become the Week 2 top scorer with 32 points. His Asseco Prokom teammate David Logan is the Euroleague top scorer at 21.5 points per game. Mensah-Bonsu led all rebounders with 14 boards, while Loren Woods is the ahead in the overall standings at 12 per game. Arroyo dished a week-high 8 assists. Three players - Demond Mallet of DKV Joventut, Omar Cook of Unicaja and Terrell McIntyre of Montepaschi Siena - lead the assists board at 5.5 per night. Terence Morris of CSKA Moscow had 5 blocks in his team's massive road win against Panionios On Telecoms. He also leads the regular season list at 4 per game. Pablo Prigioni of Tau Ceramica collected 5 steals, more than anyone this week, and is atop the global list at 3.5 per game. Four players - Mensah-Bonsu, Bouroussis, Filip Dylewicz of Asseco Prokom and Andre Hutson of Lottomatica Roma - registered respective double-doubles this week.
