Week 4 MVP: Ronald Burrell, RheinEnergie Cologne
Week 4 of the Euroleague regular season brought some special wins, one of which produced the MVP.
Ronald Burrell
of RheinEnergie was a big reason why the German champs won their first-ever Euroleague game, beating Climamio on the road in Bologna, Italy on Thursday. Burrell scored 21 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, dished 3 assists, made 3 steals and drew 7 fouls to rack up an index rating of 36, highest of the week. Another player who led his team to an historic first Euroleague victory,
Mirsad Turkcan
of Fenerbahce Ulker, amassed the second-best index rating of the week, 34. Turkcan posted 22 points and 10 rebounds in Fenerbahce's home win. Third among the top performances of the week as
Scoonie Penn
of Olympiacos (index rating 31), who scored 26 points in a road win over Le Mans.
Brent Wright
of Cibona (29) was fourth, due to his 17 points and 10 rebounds in a double-overtime loss at Partizan, and
Alex Acker
of Olympiacos (28) was fifth after he put up 21 points against Le Mans.
"It was exciting for us to get the win because we are the underdog in our group," Burrell said on Friday. "We feel we have a great opportunity to represent German basketball, and last night we showed ourselves, too, that we can win games in this group. After losing big to Tau at home, there was a question mark in everyone's head, but we bounced back strong in the German League from that type of loss and then kept it going last night. It shows our team is tough, and I'm proud of that. We didn't go to Bologna with a sense of desperation, but we did have a nothing-to-lose attitude. We just felt we had to play that way to get a win. It has definitely taken some of us a little adjusting to get going in the Euroleague. The games come quick - we're already in Week 4 - and there's not too much time to make adjustments. But we did it now and we'll see how well it works going forward."
The
overall top player rating of the season
still belongs to
Juan Carlos Navarro
of Winterthur FCB, who holds an average index of 26.00. Navarro is also the best scorer of the competition so far with 23.5 points per game. Turkcan is leading the list of the best rebounders with 10 per game.
Nikos Zisis
of Benetton continues as the best passer so far, tied with Tau Ceramica's
Zoran Planinic
, each at 5.8 assists per game.
Michael Wilkinson
of Aris TT Bank is the player with the most steals, 3.25 per game, while
Marcus Haislip
of Efes Pilsen is blocking 2 shots per game, the most in the Euroleague through four weeks.
