Week 5 MVP: Edu Hernandez-Sonseca, DKV Joventut
Appropriately enough, one of the most thrilling games so far this regular season came with the best individual performance of Week 5. Eduardo Hernandez-Sonseca came off the bench to lead DKV Joventut to an outstanding 105-100 home win against Tau Ceramica on Thursday to rejoin the Group C race. Hernandez-Sonseca scored 24 points on near-perfect shooting, 6-for-8 two-pointers and 12-for-12 free throws. He added 10 rebounds, an assist, 2 steals and 8 fouls drawn for a performance index rating of 38, the highest of the regular season so far. However, it was a bittersweet win for Hernandez-Sonseca, who learned also on Thursday night that his grandfather had passed away. Loren Woods of Zalgiris also starred in Week 5 with 18 points and 8 rebounds in his team's home loss against Regal FC Barcelona. Woods added 3 steals and 3 blocks for a 32 index rating. Olympiacos needed every bit of effort from both Yotam Halperin and teammate Lynn Greer, who registered index ratings of 29 each, to claim its overtime victory on the road against Le Mans. Halperin had 15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 fouls drawn while Greer collected 26 points on 5-for-5 three-pointers and 4 steals. Mirsad Turkcan of Fenerbahce Ulker, Charles Smith of Efes Pilsen and Andre Hutson of Lottomatica Roma, each with a 27 index rating, complete the top individual performances in this round.
Individual highs: Mirsad Turkcan of Fenerbahce Ulker, 14 rebounds
Greer and Hutson were Week 5's top scorers, each with 26 points. That was Hutson's career-high in the Euroleague. Igor Rakocevic of Tau Ceramica keeps leading the overall scorers' list through five regular season games with 21 points on average. Turkcan pulled down 14 boards in Fenerbahce's road loss against Roma. Turkcan not only leads the rebounders table this season (10.4 rpg.) but the all-time list for average (10.6 rpg.) and accumulated rebounds (1,080), too. Pablo Prigioni of Tau Ceramica dished as many as 8 assists in his team's road loss against DKV Joventut. Omar Cook of Unicaja, who had 7 assists against Maccabi Electra, leads the overall standings at 5.6 per game. David Hawkins of AJ Milano collected 6 steals, more than anyone else in Week 5, to help his team beat Panionios On Telecoms. Romain Sato is currently the steals leader at 2.8 per night. Daniel Santiago of Regal FC Barcelona had 5 blocks in his team's road win against Zalgiris. Terence Morris keeps dominating the overall standings at 2.8 per game. As many as eight players - Hernandez-Sonseca, Turkcan, Mason Rocca of AJ Milano, Lonny Baxter of Panionios On Telecoms, Ioannis Bouroussis of Olympiacos, Ksistof Lavrinovic of Montepaschi Siena, Santiago, Alain Koffi of Le Mans and Rodrigo de la Fuente of Lottomatica Roma - registered respective double-doubles in this round. For Turkcan, the all-time leader in double-doubles, too, it marked the 46th time in his Euroleague career that he had 10 or more points and rebounds in the same game.
