Panathinaikos marks 300th Euroleague victory
PanathinaikosAnother milestone has been reached in Euroleague play, this time by a team in green. In the 50-year history of Europe's top club competition, only four teams had amassed 300 total victories - until Thursday. With its resounding 69-80 road win against Zalgiris, Greek powerhouse Panathinaikos joined the 300-victory club reserved for what are the greatest team names in European basketball history. The other clubs to reach 300 wins are Real Madrid, CSKA Moscow, Maccabi Tel Aviv and FC Barcelona. The first three of those rank first to third among the most continental club titles won ever, too. Panathinakos ranks fifth with four such titles, all of them since 1996, giving the Greens the most European champion trophies of any club in the last 25 years. Panathinaikos never played in a final before it won that first title in 1996, and it started in Euroleague-level competition back in the 1961-62 season without getting a victory at all. Its first win came almost seven years later, in the 1967-68 season, when it won a second-leg game at home against Steaua Bucharest by 61-42. Almost exactly 40 years and exactly 299 victories later, the Greens go down in history again.
