Week 6 MVP: Lior Eliyahu, Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv
The best individual performance until now in the 2008-09 Euroleague came at the perfect time for his team and crowned forward Lior Eliyahu of Maccabi Electra the MVP for Week 6 of the regular season. Maccabi Electra needed nothing less than Eliyahu's best in order to outlast Cibona for a crucial 88-83 home victory in Group A, the team’s first since head coach Pini Gershon returned. Eliyahu was a one-man wrecking crew all game long, piling up 24 points on 10-for-14 two-point shooting and pulling 17 rebounds. Eliyahu added 6 assists and 8 fouls drawn for a performance index rating of 42, the highest in the Euroleague so far this season. He was followed in second place by Paulius Jankunas of Zalgiris, who shined despite his team's home loss to Panathinaikos. Jankunas scored 21 points by making 8 of 11 two-pointers while adding 11 rebounds, 2 assists and 6 fouls drawn for a 32 index rating. Tiago Splitter had a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds to help Tau Ceramica get a key road win against Fenerbahce Ulker. His 27 index rating was matched by Marko Tomas of Real Madrid, whose 18 points and 3 assists helped his team rally from 28 behind despite a road loss against Panionios On Telecoms. Marcus Brown of Maccabi and Terrell McIntyre of Montepaschi Siena, each with a 26 index rating, completed the top individual performances this week.
Individual highs: Terrell McIntyre, Montepaschi Siena, 26 points
McIntyre was the Week 6 top scorer with 26 points, tying his Euroleague career-high performance to help Montepaschi join Regal FC Barcelona as the first two teams to qualify to the Top 16. Igor Rakocevic of Tau Ceramica is still the regular season top scorer at 20.2 points per game. Eliyahu, the Week 6 MVP, led all rebounders by pulling down 17 in his team's home win against Cibona. Mirsad Turkcan of Fenerbahcer Ulker, the Euroleague's all-time top rebounder, leads the overall standings at 9.8 boards per night. Pablo Prigioni of Tau Ceramica and Joseph Gomis of Unicaja each dished 8 assists to lead the weekly standings. Omar Cook, also of Unicaja, ranks first overall (5.5 apg.). Casey Jacobsen of Alba Berlin, Pau Ribas of DKV Joventut and Jiri Welsch of Unicaja each collected 4 steals in Week 6. Three players - Prigioni, Romain Sato of Montepaschi Siena and David Logan of Asseco Prokom - tie atop the regular season board at 2.33 per game. Quinton Hosley of Real Madrid had 3 blocks against Panionios this week. Terence Morris of CSKA is the top shot blocker in the competition at 2.33 per game. Six players from as many teams - Eliyahu, Splitter, Jankunas, Alain Koffi of Le Mans, Kerem Gonlum of Efes Pilsen and Ansu Sesay of Alba Berlin - registered respective double-doubles this week.
