Viasat extends rights to Euroleague Basketball
December 24, 2008
Barcelona, December 23, 2008.
Viasat Broadcasting and Euroleague Basketball today announced that they have concluded a comprehensive new agreement for the extension of the exclusive broadcasting rights to the top European basketball competition for the Baltic states and the Nordic region. The agreement provides Viasat with free- and pay-TV rights until 2015. Viasat already holds the exclusive rights until the end of the 2009 season.
In the Baltic states all live-action will be broadcast on the new dedicated regional sports channel Viasat Sport Baltic which will launch 7 January 2009. TV3 Lithuania will broadcast highlight programmes featuring a summary of the matches plus interviews and analysis.
Euroleague Basketball is of special interest to fans in the Baltics, since one of the teams in the league is Lithuanian; Zalgiris won the Baltic league in 2008, the Lithuanian National League for the last two seasons and the Euroleague itself in 1999. The team’s matches from the current season will be shown on Viasat Sport Baltic. Zalgiris will premiere on Viasat Sport Baltic when they play French side SLUC Nancy in Kaunas on 8 January. The team’s next match is away against Regal FC Barcelona on 14 January.
“We at Euroleague Basketball are extremely happy to have renewed our agreement with Viasat Sport; the relationship with Viasat Broadcasting was already a solid one – the last deal we signed with the company is the longest deal we currently have (five years, expiring at the end of the 2009-10 season).
“Agreeing another five year deal with the Group, taking us to the end of the 2014-15 season, demonstrates just how strong the partnership is. We have thoroughly discussed and subsequently agreed with the managers of Viasat the transition from terrestrial exposure to pay-TV service, that will be very accurate in the course of this current season and the next with games and programmes running on both means of broadcasting,” Andrea Bassani, Director of Television Euroleague Basketball, commented
“Euroleague is a key asset to the newly launched Viasat Sport Baltic channel, and we are happy to have prolonged the contract for another five seasons. Zalgiris’s games on the channel, starting from 8 January, give Viasat Sport Baltic the chance to show some great local sport,” said Karolis Dapkevicius, Head of Sport Pay-TV Baltic.
In Sweden and Norway, Euroleague basketball is broadcast on each country’s Viasat Sport channel.
