Top 16 Game 1: we meet again
The Spanish League superclassic is arguably the most highly-charged game of the Top 16's opening week. Real Madrid and Barcelona have faced each other 76 times in the Spanish League history, as well as 12 times in European club competitions, including the 1996 Euroleague semifinal and the 2006 Euroleague Quarterfinal Playoffs. Barcelona knocked off Madrid in both of those opportunities. These teams have also played against each other nine times in the Spanish League finals since 1984, with Madrid leading the series 5-4. Madrid and Barcelona combine for 44 Spanish League, 42 Spanish King's Cup and 19 European club competitions titles. A more recent but no less intense rivalry marking Top 16 Week 1 features Panathinaikos and Partizan, who have faced each other eight times in Euroleague play since the 2005-06 season. Partizan knocked off Panathinaikos 82-73 in the final Top 16 date last season to advance to the playoffs over the Greens, with Nikola Pekovic and Dusan Kecman among its superstars. Pekovic and Kecman joined Panathinaikos in summer and are ready to face their former team. CSKA and Fenerbahce Ulker have faced each other 20 times, counting those games against the now defunct Ulker squad. They have gone against each other every season but one since 2001. CSKA is on a 10-game winning streak against the Turkish powerhouse, whose last win came on April 18, 2002, when Ulker downed CSKA 96-91 on the final Top 16 date. Tau Ceramica has beaten Asseco Prokom in all its four previous matchups in the last few seasons, while Alba Berlin and Maccabi Electra have not faced each other since 2002. Montepaschi makes its first trip to Cibona since the 2005 Euroleague Top 16, in which both teams split wins. Olympiacos is on a three-game winning streak against AJ Milano, which goes back to the 1997 Euroleague regular season. Last but not least, Unicaja has beaten Lottomatica Roma in four of their last five matchups. Roma, however, knocked off Unicaja in the 1998 Korac Cup eighthfinals led by Sasa Obradovic and "Dollar" Bill Edwards.
