Euroleague announces donation to Nelson Mandela Foundation
46664-sponsord AIDS/HIV education theatre performance at South African schoolThe Euroleague is proud to announce that a new contribution has been made in the name of the competition's fans to the "46664" campaign of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The seven-year-old campaign raises awareness and money to fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic afflicting poor communities. The new Euroleague donation comes from the coins collected at entrances during the 2009 Berlin Final Four due to security reasons as well as profits from the sale of the merchandising offered by Nike, the Euroleague sponsor. The donation will go specifically to the Viva Hecate project that specializes in HIV/AIDS education in South Africa. One of the main objectives of "46664" and Viva Hecate is to explain the reality of HIV/AIDS to young people and to make them understand its risks and solutions. The "46664" campaign also works to provide psychological support and advice to HIV/AIDS patients (www.46664.com).

With the proceeds from the new donation, the Euroleague for Life Social Responsibility Program will cooperate with Viva Hecate, a group of actors and actresses who are also child psychologists (www.vivahecate.com). They perform a theatrical play called "Khululeka - It's in Our Hands" at South African schools. Based on the true stories of people who have lived with HIV/AIDS, this production encourages young people to get tested, know their status and break the silence that surrounds the disease. The play stresses the necessity of banishing the stigma of being HIV-positive. The Euroleague donation will cover the costs of 20 to 30 live performances of "Khululeka - It's in Our Hands" throughout South Africa.
