LOTTOMATICA: Gentile to stay on Roma bench
Nando Gentile - Lottomatica RomaAfter taking over the bench in the middle of last season, Nando Gentile will return as head coach of Lottomatica Roma for 2009-10, too, the club announced on Saturday. Gentile, 41, had been assistant coach at Roma until December 9, 2008, when Jasmin Repesa resigned. Gentile took over on an interim basis but was endorsed one month later, after the team finished second in its Euroleague regular season group and clinched a Top 16 berth, until the end of the season. Roma went 1-5 in the Top 16. The team subsequently finished second in the Italian League regular season, but suffered an upset in the first round of the domestic playoffs. Gentile had an impressive career in which he won the Euroleague with Panathinaikos in 2000 and helped the Italian national team to a silver medal at EuroBasket 1991. He had previously been head coach of Imola in Italy's second division in the 2006-07 season. "I'm very happy to stay here," Gentile said in a statement. "It's early to talk about the team for the upcoming season, but I can tell you that we'll go on the court to do our best every night."
