One of the eight teams trying to get to the Euroleague regular season through the new Qualifying Round is Benetton Treviso, a classic European power. Benetton is well known for its outstanding organization and of course for its string of successes over the years both at home in Italy and in European club competitions. Founded in 1954, the team became a giant with the arrival of the Benetton family as owners in 1982 and has remained a force to be reckoned with ever since. Its first Italian League title came in 1992 when the legendary Toni Kukoc arrived. He helped Benetton reach the Euroleague final in 1993 and also sparked a string of three consecutive Italian Cup crowns.

The last of those coincided, in 1995, with the club's first European success, a Saporta Cup title in which Orlando Woolridge and Petar Naumoski played a critical role. Benetton added its second domestic title in 1997, another Final Four appearance in 1998, a Saporta Cup in 1999 – with Zeljko Obradovic as head coach and Zeljko Rebraca as its star player – and the Italian Cup in 2000. Benetton capped off its 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons by twice winning the Italian League and reaching the Euroleague Final Four. Benetton returned to the Euroleague title game in 2003, but FC Barcelona won the final on its home court despite a strong Benetton roster that featured players like Tyus Edney, Jorge Garbajosa, Riccardo Pittis and Trajan Langdon. Even though Benetton won its Top 16 group in 2004-05, Tau Ceramica stood in its way to the Final Four. Benetton won its fifth Italian League at the end of the 2005-06 season in which the team also returned to the Euroleague Top 16, but missed the Quarterfinal Playoffs on a tiebreaker. In 2007, Benetton lifted its eighth Italian Cup title and was one win away from reaching the Euroleague playoffs in a strange season marked by off-court decisions that caused the team to miss the Italian playoffs for the first time since 1990. The following season, Benetton won its regular season group in its ULEB Cup debut, but lost in the Last 32 round against Red Star. Last season, Benetton won its Eurocup regular season and Last 16 groups to reach the Final Eight, but the team lost against soon-to-be champ Lietuvos Rytas in the quarterfinals. Nevertheless, Oktay Mahmuti was chosen as the Eurocup Coach of the Year. Benetton also advanced to the Italian League semifinals. Now the Qualifying Round could mark the start of a new era for Benetton, a team whose experience could play a big role in competing against the very best all around the continent.
