Euroleague Regular season calendar unveiled, Opening Game headed to Israel
Barcelona, July 10th, 2009.
The
complete Euroleague Regular Season calendar
was unveiled two days after the Draw held on July 8 in Barcelona, Spain. The 2009-10 Euroleague starting point will take place in Tel Aviv, Israel with a showdown between two European basketball classics and continental club competitions winners, Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv and Union Olimpija Ljubljana.
One of world basketball's biggest success stories and Israel's signature sports club, Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv, will be hosting the 2009-10 Euroleague opening game. Founded in the mid-thirties, Maccabi is a legendary team all around the world due to its outstanding success and incredible fanbase. Maccabi has lifted as many as 47 Israeli League titles and won five European titles in 1977, 1981, 2001, 2004 and 2005. A sea of yellow fans not only celebrate their team's success in Israel, but often follow the club all over the world.
Meanwhile, Union Olimpija also dominated its domestic competition like few other teams in the continent. Olimpija just clinched its 15th Slovenian League title since the competition started in 1992. The club also added a Slovenian Cup title to round a perfect domestic season. Olimpija won the 1994 Saporta Cup title, downing Tau Ceramica 91-81 in the title game held in Laussane, Switzerland. The club also made it to the 1997 Euroleague Final Four.
The opening game is set to take place in the historical Nokia Arena on October 15, 2009.
