2009 NBA Summer League recap
The 2009 NBA Summer League came to an end at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas this weekend and two teams - the Memphis Grizzlies and the Houston Rockets - were the only unbeaten squads in the 10-day, 55-game event. Houston registered its fifth win in as many days by beating the Los Angeles Lakers 92-77 on Thursday. Brad Newley, who played for Panellinios in the Eurocup last season, had 11 points in the Rockets' fifth straight win. Charles Gaines, that played for Maccabi Electra last season, was also with the Rockets in this year's summer league. Meanwhile, Memphis edged the San Antonio Spurs 76-75 on Sunday to finish unbeaten. Marcus Williams hit a go-ahead lay-up with 0.4 left to win it for the Grizzlies, that had four players that were either in the Euroleague or the Eurocup in the last couple of years: Brion Rush, Donta Smith, Erik Daniels and Daniel Ewing, who extended his contract with Asseco Prokom this weekend. Anthony Morrow of Golden St. was one of the biggest stars in the event, as he had an all-time summer league record 47 points in a victory over the New Orleans Hornets on Thursday. His teammate Anthony Randolph was the summer league's top scorer at 26.8 per game. Joey Dorsey of Houston (14.8 rpg.) led all rebounders while Marcus Williams of Memphis and Brandon Jennings of Milwaukee - who played for Lottomatica Roma in the Euroleague last season - each dished 8.2 assists per night. “The city has certainly embraced us once again,” said Warren LeGarie, Summer League founder and sports agent. “A lot of people thought this was going to be a down year because of the economy, but we had more teams, as good if not better players than we’ve ever had before and, most importantly, the most support we’ve had by the Las Vegas community.”
