EuroBasket 2009: France is last qualifier
The last team to qualify for EuroBasket 2009 is none other than France, which blew out Belgium 92-54 on Sunday before 8,000 fans at home in Pau to claim the final place in the continental tournament, which starts next weekend. Four days after losing in Belgium, France left no doubt about its deservedness, using a 27-5 run in the second quarter to take a commanding 48-23 advantage that was never threatened again. The two countries had been part of a seven-team qualifying tourney that ran through most of August until their two-game playoff decider. Its blowout victory gave France a 158-124 aggregate triumph over the two games. Ronny Turiaf led the winners on Sunday with 19 points. Tony Parker added 16, Boris Diaw 13, Nando De Colo and Ali Traori of Asvel Basket 12 each. Antoine Diot of Le Mans dished 9 assists in 22 minutes. EuroBasket 2009 starts in Poland on Monday, September 7. France will join Group B in Gdansk, with Russia, Latvia and Germany, its first opponent.
