Finals: Spain is finally golden, Greece bronze

A tradition of finishing second ended emphatically on Sunday when clearly superior Spain marched to the gold medal at EuroBasket 2009 with a resounding 85-63 victory against young, overmatched Serbia in Katowice, Poland. Spain had finished second by losing all six of its previous finals appearances over the last 74 years, including the first European championships in 1935 and three in the last decade. That's ancient history now, as Spain not only swept the knockout stage - quarterfinals, semis and final - by an average of 20 points, but tied for the second-biggest title-game margin of victory in tournament history. Regal FC Barcelona teammates Juan Carlos Navarro and Ricky Rubio combined for 22 points. In the bronze-medal game, Greece outlasted feisty Slovenia in a defensive battle, 57-56 as Sofoklis Schortsanitis scored 23. MORE

EuroBasket 2009 preview

Some 120 players set to take part in either the Euroleague or the Eurocup next season will try to lead their national teams to glory at EuroBasket 2009, being held throughout in Poland from Sept. 7 to 20. The top six teams will qualify for the 2010 World Championships in Turkey, or seven if Turkey itself is one of the best six teams. MORE

All-Euroleague center Tiago Splitter of Caja Laboral shined with 13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists as Brazil held off host Puerto Rico 60-61 in an exciting final to claim the gold medal at the FIBA Americas Championships on Sunday. Argentina dominated Canada 88-73 for the bronze medal. MORE

Four qualify for 2010 World championships In addition to Olympics gold medalist the United States, an automatic qualifier, the Americas are sending Argentina, Brazil, Canada and Puerto Rico to the 2010 World Championships in Turkey, next summer.
