Head Coach:
Tomas Pacesas
Even though Asseco Prokom Gdynia is back in the Euroleague for a sixth straight season and returns most of the players from last year's roster, the Polish champs will have a newness about them in 2009-10. That's because the club moved a short distance to the town of Gdynia over the summer and will now play its Euroleague games fulltime in the Gdynia Sports Arena after having debuted in that venue late last season. Indeed, Prokom played Euroleague games in three different arenas last year, and still managed to reach the Top 16 for the third time in five seasons. If moving to a permanent new address helps Prokom reach new heights, the rest of the Euroleague had better beware. Among the returning faces at Prokom is former team captain and current head coach Tomas Pacesas, who starts his third season at the head of the bench. Pacesas has nine players back from last season ā including four of Prokom's best five scorers in Euroleague play: the dynamic backcourt of David Logan and Daniel Ewing will once again call the shots on the perimeter, while forwards Qyntel Woods and Ronnie Burrell pose major threats in the frontcourt. In addition, centers Adam Hrycaniuk have another year under their belts, while Pape Sow returns to the club after a year away and big Jan Jagla, himself an experienced Euroleague hand, has also joined the frontcourt. With so many players back, it is safe to say that Prokom has a big advantage in the chemistry department, a fact that could make the difference early in the season. If the team can use that chemistry to start winning early and filling its new venue with new fans, Prokom might just find itself on the path to another breakthrough season.
Logan and Ewing, two of the top eight scorers in the last Euroleague regular season, return as the stars of the backcourt. Logan had a breakout debut year, ranking third among all Euroleague scorers and fourth in steals per game. It was Logan's diving hustle and defense, however, that impressed most. Ewing compliments Logan well thanks to excellent outside shooting and outstanding court vision. He made the fourth-most three-point shots in the league last regular season and is a threat at any moment to bust one from downtown. Tyrone Brazelton, who played only the Top 16 a year ago, proved the ideal guard to come off the bench for Logan and Ewing. His speed, athleticism, defense and ball-handling mesh well with both of his backcourt mates, and Prokom fans can expect their chemistry to get even better this season. Reserve playmaker Przemyslaw Zamojski enters his fourth Euroleague campaign and is coming into his own after seeing more time last season than the first two combined. Swingman Piotr Szczotka made three starts last season and is an asset on defense.
Woods joined Prokom midway through last season and quickly started adding his double-digit scoring to the mix. Woods has all the skills ā size, speed, shooting range and court vision ā of a great small forward who also makes his teammates better. Burrell is a consummate team player. Never worried about his own stats, Burrell can contribute with his outside shooting or near-the-basket moves, on the glass and on defense. The return of Sow gives Prokom one of the most active big men around, a ferocious offensive rebounder and an overall intimidating presence in the paint. Jagla has the body of a center but the shooting touch of a guard. Those two facts make him a classic mismatch that Prokom can exploit at will. Hrycaniuk emerged to become the starting center last season, his first in the Euroleague. His aggressive nature helped him place third in the Euroleague regular season in rebounds per minute. Lapeta, Prokom's tallest player at 2.17 meters, could be poised for a breakout season. Only 22, he is naturally a shot-blocking threat and a player that can change a game in a moment. With last season's Top 16 squad being reinforced by newcomers and younger players who are that much readier, there is every reason to expect Prokom to prosper again this season. Add in the passionate Prokom fans and the Xs-and-Os expertise of Coach Pacesas - maybe a few good bounces at the new arena, too - and this team could soon challenge to become Poland's first-ever Euroleague playoff team.
ADAM HRYCANIUK, CENTER
Asseco Prokom Gdynia center Adam Hrycaniuk returned to his native Poland last summer after four years overseas and instantly became a key contributor for head coach Tomas Pacesas. Hrycaniuk was given the nod as the starting center from opening night by Pacesas, and though his role was limited, he did not disappoint. In fact, he proved more than steady at his main duty - rebounding - as the season went along, even while Prokom moved up to stiffer competition in the Top 16. Now, with a full year of experience under his belt, the 25-year old center is poised to step his game up another notch.
Hrycaniuk grew up through the ranks of Stargard Szczecinski, where he debuted as a teenager. However at age 20, he decided to go to college in the United States. After playing for three teams in four seasons, Hrycaniuk returned home last year and signed with Prokom.
Though a question mark to some, Hrycaniuk became a valuable asset to the Prokom frontline. Pacesas decided that Hrycaniuk's tough and aggressive style as a rebounder and defender would set the tone for his team in the middle. He proceeded to start Hrycaniuk consistently, and the young center delivered the physical play that Prokom needed to survive a tough regular season. In fact, he wound up ranking fourth in rebounds per minute among all Euroleague players and was also among the leaders in fouls committed. Hrycaniuk also possesses decent enough speed for a big man to possibly become a trailing threat on fastbreak opportunities as he progresses in his second Euroleague season.
One skill that Hrycaniuk did not display as often in his rookie season was his soft shooting touch from mid-range. Confidence in that jumper combined with a year's experience and Hrycaniuk's work ethic should spell success this season for the Prokom center. What's certain is that Hrycaniuk will be relied on by Prokom to rebound, and having proven he can do that, he'll be key to this team's need to defend well and take the ball back. Prokom can already score, so whatever Hrycaniuk can add in terms of dirty work could turn him into a difference-maker for the Polish champs this season.
