Baltic Cup: Zalgiris grabs first trophy!
Dainius Salenga - ZalgirisThe first domestic trophy of the 2009-10 season was won on Saturday in a battle between Euroleague rivals from Lithuania. When the dust settled, Zalgiris Kaunas had defeated Lietuvos Rytas 83-78 in a back-and-forth thriller. Danius Salenga led the winners from Zalgiris with 18 points, while newcomer Martynas Pocius had 17 and was named MVP. Marcus Brown added 12 points for Zalgiris, while big man Travis Watson had a double-double of 10 points, 11 rebounds. Mantas Kalnietis and Tadas Klimavicius chipped in 9 points each. For L. Rytas, Milka Bjelica and Bojan Popovic led the way with 16 points each, while Martynas Gecevicius had 14 and Arturas Jomantas 11. The teams alternated winning quarters, as L. Rytas took the first, 17-21, on the strength of scoring by Jomantas. Zalgiris turned things around in the second quarter, as Salenga caught fire and his team took a 45-37 lead into the half. L. Rytas fought back with offense from Bjelica, Popovic and Gecevicius to tie 61-61 after three quarters. The fourth quarter came down to some decisive shots by young Pocius, a rookie right out of university, and Salenga. The latter made the key shot with a couple seconds left to help Zalgiris start the season with a bang - and a trophy!
