MONTEPASCHI: Veteran center Marconato signs
Montepaschi Siena fortified its frontline by signing Euroleague veteran Denis Marconato, who had been training with the club during the preseason. Marconato (211, 34) returns to the Euroleague after a season away. At the time, he had played more Euroleague games than any player this decade (165), though after last season, he ranks eighth on that chart. Marconato remains the competition’s career leader in blocks (125) and is ranked fourth in career rebounds (882). The center split last season between Spanish side Bruesa, where he managed 4 points and 3.6 rebounds in 16.5 minutes per game and Armani Jeans Milano, which he helped reach the Italian League finals. Marconato began his career with Benetton Basket Treviso and played there for more than a decade spare one season on loan at Petrarca Padova. With Benetton, he reached three Euroleague Final Fours, won three Italian League titles, six Italian Cups and the 2000 Saporta Cup. Marconato moved to FC Barcelona in summer of 2005 and spent three seasons there, reaching another Euroleague Final Four and lifting a Spanish King's Cup. He was also a long-time member of the Italian national team with whom he won a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games, and a gold, silver and bronze and the European Championships.
