Maccabi Electra adds Alexander, releases Maric

Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv reshaped its frontline Thursday with the signing of power forward Joe Alexander for the remainder of the season with an option for the 2015-16 season. Maccabi released center Aleks Maric too. Alexander (2.03 meters, 28 years old) arrives from Santa Cruz of the NBA D-League, where he was among the league’s top performers this season with 21.7 points on 55.3% shooting plus 8 rebounds per game. He spent much of his youth in China, where his father was an executive for an American company. Alexander returned to the United States in high school and played college basketball at West Virginia University. He was a lottery pick for Milwaukee in the 2008 NBA Draft and totaled 67 games over two seasons for Milwaukee and Chicago. Alexander later played for Fort Wayne and Texas in the D-League, though a series of injuries caused him to spend much of the past four years on the sidelines. He had signed Krasnye Krylya of Russia in the summer of 2011, but was released early in the season due to a knee injury and did not play after that for two years. The oft-injured player is set to make his Turkish Airlines Euroleague debut with the defending champs in the Top 16.

Maric signed a short-term deal with Maccabi at the start of the season and contributed 2.3 points and 2.3 rebounds in a mostly reserve role over eight Turkish Airlines Euroleague games with the champs, who were his fourth Euroleague club. He is free to sign with another Euroleague club and be active for the start of the Top 16.
