Top 16 Round 13 bwin MVP: Alex Renfroe, ALBA Berlin

Before the Top 16, no ALBA Berlin player had been MVP of the Week in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague for more than six years. Now, a second ALBA guard in just five weeks has earned the honor as Alex Renfroe became the Top 16 Round 13 bwin MVP by rallying his team past Panathinaikos 66-68 on Thursday in Athens. It was a historic win, the first by a German team on the floor of Panathinaikos, and kept ALBA in the race for what could yet become a first-time playoff ticket for that country, too. Renfroe starred with 16 points and 9 assists for a performance index rating of 28, which was the highest in the competition in Top 16 Round 13. He also collected 4 rebounds and did not commit a single turnover. Renfroe joined backcourt mate Reggie Redding as ALBA’s second bwin MVP of the Week this season; Redding claimed his honor for Top 16 Round 9. There was stiff competition for the title this week as four players registered performance index ratings of 27: Vladimir Golubovic and Mindaugas Kuzminskas of Unicaja Malaga, Devin Smith of Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv and Boban Marjanovic of Crvena Zvezda Telekom Belgrade. Golubovic did not miss a shot in tallying 17 points and 9 rebounds, while Kuzminskas also had a perfect shooting night with 18 points, 4 rebounds and 3 blocks in Unicaja’s 75-94 road win at Nizhny Novgorod. Smith led Maccabi to an 81-72 victory over Galatasaray Liv Hospital Istanbul with 22 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. Marjanovic set a Euroleague record with his 15th double-double of the season in a 76-70 loss at Zalgiris Kaunas. The dominant center posted 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Individual leaders: Boban Marjanovic of Crvena Zvezda Telekom Belgrade sets record with 15th double-double

Anadolu Efes Istanbul guard Thomas Heurtel led his team to a brilliant come-from-behind victory over EA7 Emporio Armani Milan with 26 points, which proved to be the most scored in the Euroleague all week. Nizhny Novgorod guard Taylor Rochestie remains the league’s top scorer with 18.9 points per game and the Top 16 leader at 18.2 per game. Already the league’s top rebounder this season, Boban Marjanovic added to his impressive numbers with 12 on Friday to lead the weekly standings. Marjanovic improved his averages to 10.4 per game for the season and 10.2 in the Top 16. This round’s bwin MVP is also its assists leader; no one had more than Alex Renfroe’s 9. Former Euroleague MVP MilosTeodosic is the Euroleague leader with 7.1 assists per game and the Top 16 with 6.6 per game; he leads another former MVP, Vassilis Spanoulis of Olympiacos Piraeus, by merely a fraction. Maccabi swingman Nate Linhart topped the week’s charts with 4 steals. Rudy Fernandez of Real Madrid leads the league with 1.7 steals per game and the Top 16 with 1.8 per game. Mindaugas Kuzminskas’s 3 blocked shots were the best in the Euroleague in Top 16 Round 13. Art Parakhouski of Nizhny Novgorod Parakhouski is the leader for blocks this season (2.0 bpg.) and blocks in the Top 16 (2.3 bpg.). Top 16 Round 13 featured three double-doubles: Nemanja Bjelica (17 points, 10 rebounds) of Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul, Marjanovic, and Jamel McLean (11 points, 11 rebounds) of ALBA Berlin.
