Week 3 MVP: Romain Sato, Montepaschi Siena
One of the Euroleague's quiet superstars, Montepaschi Siena small forward Romain Sato, made plenty of noise to run away with the MVP honor for regular season Week 3 while helping to help keep his team undefeated at 3-0 in Group A. Sato was a major reason why Montepaschi was able to pull off one of the biggest scoring swings ever seen in a Euroleague game. Despite quickly falling 21 points behind against Asvel Basket on the road, Montepaschi rallied over the next three quarters to win 65-82, a 38-point swing from its earlier deficit. Sato was unstoppable, scoring every way possible to amass a career-high 33 points while making 8 of 12 two-pointers, 4 of 6 triples and 5 of 6 free throws. He also added 6 rebounds, 2 steals and 5 fouls drawn for a performance index rating of 37. Following Sato came Matt Walsh of Union Olimpija, one of last week's co-MVPs, who had another huge game, albeit in another losing effort. Walsh scored 27 points and pulled 6 rebounds while drawing 11 fouls for a 29 index rating. In third place with a rating of 27 was forward Paulius Jankunas of Khimki Moscow Region, whose 23 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals helped his team to its second victory so far. Following him came Efes Pilsen center Kaya Peker, the author of 17 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals, all good for a 26 index rating, but not good enough to beat host Unicaja in their Group B overtime thriller. The fifth-best performance of the week belonged to Jamont Gordon of Cibona, whose rating of 25 was made up of 15 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals in a losing effort at Fenerbahce Ulker.
Individual highs: Sato, 33 points
Those 33 points by Sato were not only the most for Week 3, but the most by any one player this season so far. Walsh, however, holds the best scoring average through three weeks with 25.7 points per game. Three players shared the highest rebound total, 10, in Week 3: Oguz Savas of Fenerbahce Ulker, Pape Sow of Asseco Prokom Gdynia and Travis Watson of Zalgiris, who leads the overall standings by averaging the same 10 boards through three games. The impressive mark of 10 assists each made Omar Cook of Unicaja and Terrell McIntyre of Montepaschi Siena the top passers of the week. McIntyre is the overall leader at 9.3 per game. Six players - Patrick Beverley and Theo Papaloukas of Olympiacos, Billy Keys and Jamon Lucas of Maroussi, Chuck Eidson of Maccabi Electra and Carlos Jimenez of Unicaja - had 4 steals each in Week 3, while three others - Eidson, Jamont Gordon of Cibona and Ibby Jaaber of Lottomatica Roma - average 3 after as many games. The top shot-blockers of the week were Omer Asik of Fenerbahce Ulker and Mirza Begic of Zalgiris, with 3 each, while D'or Fischer of Maccabi is tops overall with 2.3 per game. Four of the five players mentioned above - Watson, Cook, Savas and Sow - pulled off double-doubles in Week 3.
