Regular Season Week 4 in review
Montepaschi Siena defeated Fenerbahce Ulker 83-87 as all-Euroleague guard Terrell McIntyre drilled 23 points, including 5 three-pointers. It was the 20th straight Euroleague game in which McIntyre has made at least 1 three-pointer and he is now shooting a career best 50% from downtown this season. Also in the game, Henry Domercant extended his run of successful free throws made to 34. With the win, the Italian champs remained unbeaten heading into a Week 5 showdown with co-Group A leader Barcelona.
Regal FC Barcelona topped visiting Asvel Basket 76-62 in what was a close game for more than three quarters. Pete Mickeal paced the winners with 16 points. The win was Barca’s 18th in a row against French clubs. The streak dates back over a decade to the 1997-98 season. The last time Barca lost to a French side was in January 1998, when Racing Paris won a 68-67 decision. That night a 17-year Juan Carlos Navarro came off the bench to play six minutes in his Euroleague debut.
Cibona downed Zalgiris 64-52 at home in Zagreb for its first win of the season. Marko Tomas fueled a 10-0 third-quarter run and scored several key points in the fourth to lead Cibona to the victory. Tomas also paced the winners with 14 points. He has led the Croatian champs in scoring in three of the four games played this season. Travis Watson grabbed 12 rebounds in defeat, raising his league leading average to 10.5 boards per game.
Unicaja remained perfect in Group B after a 74-86 road win over Entente Orleanaise thanks to 30 points from Taquan Dean. The Unicaja sharpshooter shined with 15 points in a 0-22 run to finish the second quarter that gave Unicaja a 28-42 lead that it would never relinquish. Dean finished with 7 three-pointer, tying him for the fourth most ever made in a Euroleague game. Led by Dean, Unicaja made 16 of 32 triples (50%) for the game.
Lietuvos Rytas pounded Partizan Belgrade 78-56 to remain one win behind the group leader as Martynas Gecevicus scored 19 to lead five L. Rytas scorers in double figures. Gecevicus shot 3 for 4 from downtown, giving his 13 triples this season, tied for second most in the league. Donatas Zavackas hit 3 three-pointers in the first quarter as L. Rytas took control and went 4 for 4 from behind the arc for the game. The rest of the team shot a combined 1 for 11 on threes. Partizan as a team was 2 for 11 from downtown.
Olympiacos routed Efes Pilsen 105-90 behind some prime performances from its stars. Ioannis Bourousis returned from injury to net 23 points in 12 minutes and Linas Kleiza recorded 20 points and 11 rebounds for the victors. Theo Papaloukas also dished a season-high 8 assists. The key to the win was that Olympiacos committed just 7 turnovers, while Efes had 20. It was the Reds’ first time scoring in triple digits since a 113-80 beating of Union Olimpija in December 2007.
Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv handed Lottomatica Roma its first loss and joined a three-way tie for first place in Group C with a 90-92 overtime win in the Italian capital. A pair of Chuck Eidson free throws with 15.3 seconds left in overtime proved to be the difference after Ibby Jaaber failed to score on the last possession. Alan Anderson led Maccabi with 27 points – 1 shy of his Euroleague career high. It was Maccabi’s eight straight win over an Italian club and fourth in a row in Italy. The last time Maccabi lost in Italy was 88-81 in overtime at Lottomatica in January 2007.
Caja Laboral stopped Maroussi 83-103 in Athens for its third consecutive victory. The visitors depth proved the difference as the Laboral reserves outscored the starters 59-44. Carl English led the way with a season-high 17 points, while Fernando San Emeterio and Mirza Teletovic came off the bench for 16 apiece. Maroussi lost big man Levon Kendall to an ankle injury in the first quarter that may have ended his season.
CSKA Moscow downed visiting Union Olimpija 79-69 to break a two-game losing streak. Trajan Langdon's team-high 19 points gave him 10th-place on the Euroleague's all-time scoring list with 1,820 points. He entered the game tied with injured Panathinaikos star Sarunas Jasikevicius. Overshadowed by the loss was another fine performance from Matt Walsh, who scored 21 points and now leads the league in scoring (24.5 ppg.) and three-pointers (15) and is second in index (26 pg.).
Real Madrid bulldozed host EWE Baskets 61-104 in Oldenburg as six players scored in double-figures. Darjus Lavrinovic led the way with 18 points in 18 minutes as all 11 Madrid players scored and were on the floor for at least seven minutes. Lavrinovic has now scored in double figures in 13 straight Euroleague games. Rimas Kaukenas scored 13 and has now reached double figures in 10 straight games. The 2 points scored by veteran center Ignacio De Miguel were his first since playing for Unicaja at the 2007 Final Four in Athens.
Panathinaikos downed host Asseco Prokom 65-75 to bounce back from its only loss of the season. Drew Nicholas and Nikola Pekovic paced the defending champs with 17 points apiece. Nichols drilled 5 three-pointers, marking the 13th time in his Euroleague career – 80 games – that he has made at least 5. The Greens improved to 5-0 all-time against Prokom and 12-2-1 (a tie in a 1998 Saporta Cup game against Slask Wroclaw) all-time against Polish clubs.
Khimki Moscow Region picked up a 68-72 road win over Armani Jeans Milano after coming back in the final quarter from game-long deficits. Keith Langford led the winners with 17 points on countless fearless drives to the basket. The secret to Khimki’s success was its outside shooting. Khimki connected on 56% from downtown (14 for 25) compared to just 24% (6 for 25) on two-pointers. Khimki also shot 90% from the line (18 of 20).
