Teledeporte chooses Euroleague Basketball
Television Española (TVE) and Euroleague Basketball have agreed to choose the company's all-sports channel, Teledeporte, as the home for Europe's top basketball competition.
After five years of continuous presence in the grid of the different TVE channels (La 1, La 2 and Teledeporte), officials of the TV channel and of the Euroleague have decided to give a step forward in this fruitful relationship by making Teledeporte the channel where all the Euroleague's teams in Spain - Real Madrid live and three other Spanish teams on tape delay - may be followed with the help of the commentator team of Lalo Alzueta, Esteban Gómez, Pere Ferreras, Diego Martínez, Sergio García and José Luis Galilea.
After analyzing the situation of the impending technological blackout, which will be generalized in Spain starting May 2010, the two companies have decided to make Teledeporte home to the top European club basketball competition, in its entirety.
This decision will allow all Euroleague fans to clearly identify when and where they will be able to access all games of the four Spanish teams participating in the competition.
The treatment in both quantity and quality that Teledeporte can bring to the Euroleague will be of great benefit to viewers in Spain. At the same time, the arrangement will assure added value to the TVE sports channel by always including the very best of European club basketball.
During the first five weeks of the current season, with broadcasts every Wednesday and Thursday of Real Madrid games followed by those of Regal F.C. Barcelona, Caja Laboral and Unicaja, the audience ratings for Teledeporte have been very optimistic - almost double the channel's average.
The Sports Director of TVE, Mr. Ignacio Gómez-Acebo, said: "The strategic decision of the Teledeporte board is essential for the placement of the theme channels in TVE. The extraordinary quality of the competition and production of Euroleague Basketball makes this definitive placement in the Teledeporte grid a secure value in our goal toward the total incorporation of sports events of maximum interest for our audience. The agreement reached with the Euroleague make us very happy as they have understood that our strategy for the consolidation of Teledeporte is the correct one."
"We are very satisfied with the common decision we have agreed upon with TVE officials to take advantage of a favourable position, keeping in mind the imminent analog TV blackout," Mr. Jordi Bertomeu, Euroleague Basketball CEO, stated. "The initial doubts that we had with regards to changing from an open channel to Teledeporte were quickly clarified when we identified the great possibilities that a theme channel of such a great quality and national coverage offered us. We are confident that this step forward will suppose a bigger promotion and development of basketball in all the national territory."
